Winter has arrived 🙂.

It is essential to maintain your exercise routines despite the cold mornings and chilly evenings.

These routines are just as crucial now as they
were in autumn, if not more so, to help prevent the onset of winter illnesses.

Once you initiate physical activity, you will acclimate and experience significant improvements in your overall well-being compared to remaining inactive 🙂.

Happy Friday, everyone. Have a great weekend from my workout buddy Olly and me. He's a right task master, this one 😉.

As a personal trainer, you have probably heard me say, “Stop having a holiday”, focus on your workout!

Well, yesterday I caught myself having a holiday. Time to tweak things.

Have you noticed that your workout intensity has dropped, or your workout is now easy to nail?

Tweaking your workout is one way to reach your fitness goals, and why not book a one-on-one PT session to get your focus back on track.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, it's getting cooler outside.

Could certainly do with a bowl of this very yummy Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Ginger Pumpkin Soup.

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil,
1kg pumpkin, peeled and chopped,
1 1/2 shallots, peeled and chopped,
1 tsp fresh ginger, grated,
2 tbsp chives,
1/2 cup fresh mint,
1/2 tbsp chilli powder,
1 litre (4 cups) organic vegetable stock (gluten free if possible),
1/2 cup thick coconut milk.

To serve:

extra coconut milk and chilli powder,
1 lime.

Heat the oil, then place the pumpkin, shallots, ginger, mint and chives into a large pot to sauté for 5-10 minutes. Add the stock, coconut milk and chilli powder, and season with salt and pepper.

Bring to the boil, then simmer for 30-40 minutes.

In batches, carefully blitz in a food processor before serving, garnished with a swirl of coconut milk and a sprinkle of fresh herbs and/or chilli powder.

Enjoy 🤤

Yikes!! It is June already 😞. Where is this year going? Are you on track for a healthier, happier you this summer?

No! Do you have your head in the clouds thinking you have plenty of time to get on to this?

Well, sorry people, here is a bit of a reality check for us all. This year is running away on us. Summer will be here before we know it.

Don't waste this winter or let it beat you. Now is the perfect time to really get into a healthier, fitter, and happier you.

If you can nail small lifestyle changes now at the beginning of winter, you will really enjoy summer this year. It is not big changes you have to make to achieve this.

There is no magic pill you can take for long-term gains. You have to commit and give yourself time and put in 100% effort. No one else can do this for you.

We have all got this 🤜

Have you heard of LISS?

Low Intensity Steady State. What's it all about?

As I have an ongoing knee issue, high-intensity workouts (HIIT & Sprints) are off the cards for me.

So, how am I getting in a cardio hit? With a LISS sessions at the tail end of a strength workout on my treadmill. You could do this type of session many ways not just on a treadmill.

Here's what actually happens when you do incline walking after strength training:

As your muscles are already warm. Your glycogen is already low. That's the window your body turns to burn fat for fuel, not muscle.

After lifting, your body switches to fat as its primary fuel source as you've depleted glycogen stores.

* An incline walk keeps your heart rate in that fat-burning zone without spiking cortisol.
* No sprinting. Just efficient fat burning

For a lot of women 40+, high cortisol = belly fat that won't budge.

A steady incline walk after lifting keeps cortisol low while still burning calories.

15-20 minutes on your treadmill at an Incline of 8-12 with a speed setting around 5km/h, holding nothing, is a great process to help us get leaner without destroying ourselves in the process.

Give it a try, let me know what you think!

Happy King's birthday weekend from sunny Marlborough.

Paula dragged me and my partner in crime, Anzac, out for a wild ride and a romp amongst the vines.

Anzac and I hope you all have a blast today 🐶

With winter knocking on our door, a personal trainer's favorite saying at this time of year is:

'Summer bodies are made in winter.'

However, I like to think more along the lines of:

'Summer health, fitness, and well-being are made in winter.'

Now is the perfect time to review what you are doing across the board: fitness, nutrition, and health checks.

For me, my focus is on my macros and calorie intake.

Do you count the above? Is counting one more important than the other?

Both are important; if your goal is to drop body weight, then you need to be in a calorie deficit and use your calories the right way to fuel your body.

This is where tracking your macros is important.
