SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS SERIES:

🔸️RASH🔸️

When performing our self checks it's important we get used to the normal LOOK of our breasts & chest area. Looking down at them & also looking in the mirror to get used to your normal. How do they usually sit? What is your usual shape & size, & how does this change throughout your cycle? Of equal importance is your skin.

Making sure to notice any skin changes such as a new or unusual rash.

A rash is an area of skin that has changes in texture, appearance & colour. So knowing how things normally look is so important to be able to notice sometimes subtle changes. A breast rash is redness or irritation that occurs on the skin of the breast which can also look inflamed & be itchy, scaly, painful or blistered.

While a rash on your breast is most likely to be caused by an infection, allergic reaction or common skin condition such as eczema or dermatitis; in rare cases it can also be a symptom of breast cancer.

A change in breast colour or skin condition, with progressive reddening or inflammation, needs to be checked out swiftly to exclude a rare but fast growing inflammatory breast cancer. The skin is often thickened and may have a rash that looks like orange peel (referred to as "peau d'orange"). Redness, or sometimes a pink flush, occupies at least one-third of the breast, and sometimes it may have a bruised appearance. These symptoms can often be confused with a breast infection, but important to know these changes will not respond to antibiotics.

Next time you're performing your self check make sure to take an extra conscious LOOK at the skin & appearance of your breasts and chest area & as usual if anything has changed or doesn't feel right, see your doctor.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS SERIES:

🔸️A NEW LUMP 🔸️

The importance of knowing your normal and performing regular self checks is a key aspect of an early diagnosis. This gives you your absolute best chance of survival if you are diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

When we check our breasts regularly throughout the various stages of our menstrual cycle we become intune with our normal hormonal lumps, bumps and changes. This means when you stumble across an abnormal lump which needs checking, you are far more likely to instinctively know it varies from your normal changes and act promptly.

Lumps can be found within the breast tissue, under the armpits or up under the collarbone.

A new lump or thickening in the breast tissue is not always a sign of breast cancer. It can be any number of common breast abnormalities. But it is super important to get it checked properly by your GP or healthcare professional to know for sure and act accordingly.

The average size of a lump found from self checks is around 2.2cm. That’s roughly the size of an average olive or grape. Mammograms and other imaging modalities can detect lesions when they are as small as 2mm.

Breast Cancer in younger women is rare.. but statistically still 6% are under the age of 40. That's well before you join the national screening programme. During your 20's, 30's and early 40's your BEST tool is your selfcheck.

💛 3 weeks as Mrs Newman 💛

Been quiet on here lately as we've hit another big milestone!

After 8 years engaged we finally tied the knot.

Incredibly special to have our wee boy gang share in our day.

The perfect time to get married. To be able to thank eachother for everything we've been for eachother and celebrate the strength of our relationship after we've riden some wild seasons. To celebrate being in remission for 5 years. To celebrate the beautiful wee family we've created. And to have all our favorite people in one place. The best day! 💛

Two biggest risk factors for Breast Cancer?

Being a female and getting older.

As we age our chances of developing Breast Cancer increase. The average age of diagnosis in NZ is 58. The majority of cases, 70-75%; are in women over 50 and around 13% are women under the age of 45.

No matter what stage of life you're in, it's super important to get to know your normal and develop a consistent self checking habit.

I just LOVE hearing feedback on our sessions and what the key takeaways were. This testimonial totally filled my cup 🧡

"Check your bits- and that we did. We were lucky enough to have our culture committee approve a talk by Tamara at our most recent staff meeting.

Tam came and chatted to our workplace about the importance of daily breast checks and getting to know your normal. Our team of 17 all learnt something new with the talk covering the basic breast anatomy, Breast abnormalities, Signs and symptoms of Breast Cancer and how to perform a self-check. Tam put everyone at ease with her beautiful nature, her positive demeaner, and her straightforward answers to everyone’s questions. Nothing was off the table, and a lot of my colleagues left with answers to questions they felt too embarrassed to ask elsewhere. Knowing Tamara has already been on her own Breast Cancer journey so young and her background in Imaging really cemented the need for self-awareness around our bodies and how important this message is to convey.

Throughout the weeks we have discussed Tamara’s presentation multiple times in the workplace, and many of us have spread awareness to other women and men in our lives. The education is so important to share! I want to shout it from the rooftops!

I highly recommend that everyone listens to Tamara’s story and the importance of knowing your normal- so that way you can advocate for yourself if you need to. The Check Your Bits products were shown at the end of the presentation, and we all happily brought a bottle or two to take home. A Passion Project to be proud of! Thanks Tam!"

Want me to come along and empower your work team? Send me a DM to lock a session in before the year ends!

Story time.

Picture this. You're heavily pregnant. In the shower you stumble across a lump in your breast as you're washing.
Odd. You haven't noticed that before. But you don't actually check them regularly. I mean you have no family history of Breast cancer right!?

You think hmm I should probably get the Dr to check that before I have the baby.

You're in the Dr's office. She has a look and feel herself. She says “You're young, it feels like a simple cyst to me. I don't think it's anything to worry about.”

You think ohh phew! Great news.

6 months later that lump is really big now and obvious too, it's uncomfortable. You go back to the Dr's. This time she seems more worried. She sends you for an urgent ultrasound. They have a look and say they need to biopsy it.

It's cancer they tell you. Unfortunately it's spread to your lymph nodes.

Now picture this. You're heavily pregnant. In the shower you stumble across a lump in your breast as you're washing. Odd. You haven't noticed that before. You check regularly, so you definitely know your normal and you know with certainty that this is NOT NORMAL.

You think yes I definitely need to get the Dr to check that before I have the baby.

You're in the Dr's office. She has a look and feel herself. She says “You're young, it feels like a simple cyst to me. I don't think it's anything to worry about.”

But you know what's normal for you. You trust your gut instincts. Something just doesn't feel right about this. So you insist. You advocate for yourself like your life depends on it.

She agrees to send you for an ultrasound. They have a look and say they need to biopsy it to know for sure what it is.

It's cancer they tell you. BUT you caught it early. We can treat this. Treatment will still be hard, but you're going to be ok 🧡

Moral of the story… Know Your Normal. Check Your Bits regularly.
