When I had my stroke, I desperately wanted to hear from someone who had been through it and found a way forward.

Not someone promising miracles.

Just someone who could honestly say:

“There is hope.”

That experience is one of the reasons I created Stroke Recovery by Rewired Runner.

We’re building a community for stroke survivors, brain injury survivors, carers, family members, and anyone navigating a significant setback in life.

Our goal is simple:

✅ Share real recovery stories
✅ Provide practical encouragement
✅ Explore the science of recovery in plain language
✅ Remind people they are capable of more than they may believe today

Recovery can feel isolating.

It doesn’t have to be.

If you’d like to be part of a growing community focused on hope, progress, resilience, and recovery, I’d love you to join us.

Recovery isn’t built in a day.

It’s built one small action at a time.

One exercise.
One walk.
One speech practice session.
One attempt when you’d rather give up.

After my stroke, I wanted progress to happen faster. Most survivors do.

But recovery doesn’t usually work that way.

The brain adapts through repetition.
Confidence grows through evidence.
Hope grows through progress.

The goal isn’t perfection.

The goal is to keep showing up.

Every step forward, no matter how small, is another signal to your brain and body that change is still possible.

If you’re rebuilding after stroke, brain injury, illness, or a major setback, don’t underestimate the power of consistent action.

Small steps compound.

Sleep after stroke can feel frustrating… but it may also be one of the most important parts of recovery.

After my stroke, fatigue hit harder than anything I expected. Some days even a shower or simple rehab session could leave me wiped out.

Sleep wasn’t just “rest.” It felt like part of the rebuilding.

Over time I learned that sleep can influence so much:
🧠 mental clarity
🧠 energy for rehab and daily life
🧠 emotional resilience
🧠 and often just having enough in the tank to keep showing up again tomorrow

If sleep feels messy or unpredictable after stroke — you’re not alone. That’s incredibly common.

And if today feels heavy, needing more rest doesn’t mean you’re going backwards. Sometimes recovery is happening quietly in the background.

Recovery often isn’t dramatic.
It’s built one day at a time — through rest, repetition, and continuing to believe progress is still possible.

If this resonates, follow Stroke Recovery by Rewired Runner for practical recovery ideas grounded in lived experience.

And feel free to comment below:

Stroke fatigue is real — but so is progress.

One of the hardest parts of stroke recovery for me wasn’t always what people could see. It was the fatigue.

Early on, simple things like showering, getting dressed, or trying to hold a conversation could completely wipe me out. At times it felt overwhelming.

Back then I never could have imagined where recovery would eventually take me.

Fast forward to today… and I’m training for the UTMB World Series Finals around Mont Blanc in France — 174km through the mountains.

That doesn’t mean recovery was quick or easy. It definitely wasn’t.
It came through patience. Rest. Small daily wins. A lot of setbacks. And continuing to believe progress was still possible even when I couldn’t see much changing.

Fatigue after stroke can feel incredibly hard.
But fatigue doesn’t mean you’ve stopped progressing.

Healing can take longer than people realise. The brain and body can keep adapting. Capacity can build. Life can grow again.

Please hold onto hope.

Stroke Recovery by Rewired Runner exists to share practical ideas, lived experience, and encouragement for survivors and families walking this path.

Your comeback can still be built — one step at a time.

Big day for me today.

The UTMB gear has arrived for the journey to Chamonix, and every logo on this kit represents something much bigger than running.

From a stroke survivor who once struggled to walk, speak clearly, and imagine a future… to preparing for one of the toughest ultra-marathons in the world. That still feels surreal sometimes.

A huge thank you to Corporate Energy for backing this journey and believing in the bigger purpose behind it. Your support helps make these opportunities possible and helps amplify a message that recovery, hope, and rebuilding are possible — even after life changes in an instant.

Also incredibly proud to continue supporting Stroke Aotearoa New Zealand and the work they do for stroke survivors and families across the country. Stroke impacts thousands of lives every year, and so much more awareness, education, and support is still needed.

And of course, Rewired Runner continues to grow into something far bigger than I ever imagined. What started as my own recovery journey is becoming a platform focused on stroke recovery, hope, resilience, practical tools, and showing people that progress can continue for years.

This isn’t just race gear.
It’s a reminder of what can happen when people, organisations, and communities back belief instead of limitations.
