Fabulous Friday – 29th May

We had a full house today! It was awesome to see some familiar faces return, along with lots of new faces joining us.

After our check-in, we got busy making Tūpākihi balm and Kawakawa lip balm, sharing knowledge and enjoying time together in the whare.

Papa Joe also shared some of the history of Tuia Maara Whenua and spoke about his desire to see our TUIA Maara Whenua nursery and the whare there completed as soon as possible. A key part of our kaupapa is to return rākau back to the whenua for planting. We cannot continue to only take from Tāne Mahuta — we must also reciprocate by giving back to our ngahere.

Our nursery site at the end of Melba Street provides us with that opportunity. This remains an important moemoeā of our kaumātua, and one that our rōpū is committed to bringing to life.

Thursday 28th May – Ngahere Haerenga

We also spent a fantastic day in the ngahere at Raetea Forest with the Te Rangi Aniwaniwa Hauora Academy. Activities included plant identification, harvesting rongoā plants, preparing plant material for oil infusions, and making balms and lip balms.

Another great week of learning, sharing, and strengthening our connection to Te Taiao. 🌿💚

This week we had another awesome day at Tihei Wā Mauri Ora, our Te Hiku Rongoā Māori whare rongoā, hosting some of the Te Hiku Hauora young mums for a hands-on rongoā session.

Together, we made Mahana Ora wai rākau spray, as well as kawakawa and coconut oil balm for the babies.

It was also lovely to have some of the babies in our space — they bring such a beautiful light and energy to our whare. 💛

On Thursday, we have a ngahere hīkoi with the students from the Hauora Academy at Te Rangi Aniwaniwa.

Then on Friday, we have our usual Fabulous Friday — an open space for any whānau wanting to learn more about rongoā alongside some of our kaumātua. Just bring a shared lunch for the day and come join us.

We’re also sharing some photos from last week’s Hauora Academy workshop and Fabulous Friday

Rā Nehu today for our Dolly Gaylene Kemp, one of our cherished kairongoā from the Te Hiku Rongoā Māori Collective.

It has been an honour and privilege to care for her tūpāpaku naturally with rongoā, and to see her resting in her own takapau whāranui.

Dolly had helped Elaine, Ejay Tee, and Christine to prepare her own takapau whāranui — a beautiful reflection of the mātauranga and aroha she carried.

Over the years, we attended many wānanga together and also facilitated our own as Tuia Māra Whenua Rōpū Rongoā, sharing knowledge about takapau whāranui and the natural preparation of our loved ones using Rongoā Māori.

To have helped care for her throughout her tangi over these past few days has been a true honour.

E moe e te tuahine i raro i te manaaki o ngā tini tūpuna kua whetūrangitia. Haere, haere, haere atu ra!

You will be greatly missed, our dear friend.
Love you always and forever.

Awesome day today at Tihei-Wā Mauri Ora for Fabulous Friday.

There was plenty happening and lots of different mahi underway. We spent time tidying up the mōkihi (raupō waka), making tītoki wai māori, preparing and soaking pukatea in flaxseed oil, and enjoying weaving with Betty.

It was also a very special day as we celebrated the 86th birthday of Papa Joe Body. We are deeply grateful for all the knowledge, guidance, and teachings Papa Joe has shared with us over the years.

We were also privileged to have a wonderful visit from our Mid North Rongoā Māori whānau, Ualesi Vaega and Minnie Gordon. It was lovely to have them join us in the whare, even for a short time.
