One of the biggest nutrition lessons I’ve learnt after working in the health sector for the past nine years, including the last six years as a Metabolic Health Coach, is this:

Consistency beats perfection.

The people who achieve lasting change aren’t usually the ones with the perfect meal plan or the perfect routine.

They’re the ones who keep showing up.

One balanced meal.

One walk.

One strength session.

One better decision than yesterday.

Health isn’t built by being perfect.

It’s built by repeating the habits that matter most.

I’ve learnt that in my own life too.

Between injury, family, work, and building a business, there have been plenty of days where perfection wasn’t possible.

But consistency was.

If there’s one thing I’d encourage you to focus on, it’s not doing everything.

It’s simply doing the next right thing.

Then do it again tomorrow.

Sleep is one of the most valuable health tools we have, yet it’s often the first thing we sacrifice.

I’ve come to believe that sleep is the catalyst for change.

Not because it magically fixes our health overnight, but because a well-rested mind is better able to make decisions, solve problems, manage stress and plan ahead.

When we’re tired, everything feels harder.

We’re more likely to reach for convenience foods.

Less likely to move our bodies.

More reactive.

Less patient.

And often less aware of the choices we’re making.

For me, making time for sleep is about more than closing my eyes.

It’s about creating space at the end of the day to unwind.

To slow down.

To reflect.

What went well today?

What could I have done better?

What did I learn?

What will I take into tomorrow?

Not with judgement.

Not with guilt.

Just awareness.

Because lasting health isn’t built by being perfect.

It’s built by paying attention, learning from each day, and giving ourselves the opportunity to recover so we can show up again tomorrow.

Tomorrow starts the night before.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt over the past nine years owning and managing a fitness centre in Te Tai Tokerau, and now working in primary care as a Metabolic Health Coach, is that people don’t usually seek help when everything is going well.

Many people come to me after a health scare.

A diabetes diagnosis.

A heart event.

Kidney concerns.

The need for surgery.

Or a moment where they’re forced to face the reality of their health.

In that space, most people want a quick fix.

I understand why.

Because often they’re scared.

At the gym, I learnt that people are often afraid of failing, afraid of being judged, and afraid of showing emotion.

Working in primary care has taught me that underneath those fears is something else.

People want to know it’s not too late.

They want hope.

They want a plan.

Most of all, they want connection.

What I’ve realised is that whether someone walks into a gym or a doctor’s office, they’re often carrying the same fears.

The truth is that lasting health rarely comes from quick fixes.

It comes from understanding what got us here, making small changes we can sustain, and having support when life gets hard.

The strongest people I’ve worked with aren’t the ones who changed overnight.

They’re the ones who kept showing up.

That’s why my approach to metabolic health isn’t about chasing perfection.

It’s about helping people understand what’s happening in their body, finding a place to start, and building habits they can sustain.

Because health isn’t built in a day.

It’s built one decision at a time.

Maureen (Mor Mor) Lemalu

Easy walk today along the awa with Bobbi and Breech.

One thing I’ve learnt through working in health is that we often think we need to do something big to improve our wellbeing.

The truth is, some of the most powerful things we can do are also the simplest.

🚶 Move your body regularly.
☀️ Get some sunlight.
💧 Stay hydrated.
😌 Take a break from stress.
🐾 Spend time doing something you enjoy.

These small daily habits support our metabolic health, energy levels, sleep, mood, and overall wellbeing.

Health isn’t built in a day. It’s built through the choices we make every day.

What simple habit are you working on right now?

What is Metabolic Health?

It’s a term we hear more and more, but what does it actually mean?

In simple language, metabolic health is how well your body creates and uses energy.

When your metabolic health is working well, your body can better manage things like:

🌿 Blood sugar levels

🌿 Blood pressure

🌿 Cholesterol and blood fats

🌿 Body fat and muscle mass

🌿 Energy levels

🌿 Sleep and recovery

🌿 Hunger and appetite

Many of us believe that getting older automatically means living with more pain, more medication, more health conditions, and less independence.

But growing older and becoming less healthy are not the same thing.

Metabolic health is about improving the things we can influence today, so we can enjoy more years doing the things we love tomorrow.

For me, metabolic health isn’t about chasing a perfect body.

It’s about having the energy to live healthy.

It’s about being able to get up from the floor.

It’s about keeping your independence.

It’s about reducing your risk of conditions that can impact your quality of life.

Most importantly, it’s about adding life to your years, not just years to your life.

The good news?

You don’t have to change everything overnight.

Better sleep.

More movement.

Enough protein.

Less ultra-processed food.

Managing stress.

Small changes, done consistently, can have a powerful impact over time.

When you hear the words “metabolic health”, what do they mean to you?

My Story: Why I Became Interested in Metabolic Health

This is my mum and me.

Many years ago, Mum experienced what we were told was a heart event. I couldn’t get to her immediately, but when I arrived at Middlemore Hospital, I was relieved to hear that her heart was actually strong.

What the doctors told us was that stress and excess weight were placing significant pressure on her health.

As I learnt more about what was happening in her life, I discovered she was carrying a heavy load. Long work hours, night shifts, workplace stress, poor sleep, and very little time to look after herself.

I asked Mum to come and live with me.

What started as a short stay turned into six months. Then another two months because Mum didn’t want to leave, and Dad kindly agreed she could stay longer.

During that time, we didn’t do anything fancy.

We focused on sleep.

We started aqua aerobics.

We learnt about protein-rich foods.

We talked about carbohydrates and how different foods affect our bodies.

We cooked simple meals.

We created routines.

Most importantly, we reduced stress.

Eight months later, Mum had lost 48 kilograms.

But the weight loss wasn’t the biggest win.

She had more energy. More confidence. More life.

I still remember the day she wrapped one of Dad’s belts around her waist and laughed because it fit.

That journey taught me something I have never forgotten.

Health is about more than food.

It’s about sleep, stress, movement, relationships, purpose, and understanding how our bodies work.

Looking back, helping Mum was one of the first experiences that sparked my interest in metabolic health and helping others improve their wellbeing.

Today, it’s a privilege to support people on their own health journeys.

I’d love to hear from you. Has there been someone in your life who inspired you to take your health more seriously?
