Why am I still so tight??!!
I’ve been hearing versions of this a LOT lately…
“I’m doing the stretches!”
“I’m still exercising!”
“Why do I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus?”
“Why is it so hard to get moving in the morning?”
“Are my shoulders EVER going to come down from my ears?” 😂
And the answer is… your body is not just a collection of muscles that need stretching.
It is a WHOLE system.
One little part of that system people hardly ever think about is, your Lymphatic System.
In very simple terms, think of it as part of your body’s clean-up and fluid-management crew.
It helps move excess fluid and waste material out of your tissues and plays a big role in your immune system.
But unlike blood, lymph doesn’t have one big heart pumping it around.
Lypmh LOVES movement.
Walking.
Breathing deeply.
Stretching.
Strength work.
Yoga.
Pilates.
Massage.
Just generally getting your body moving.
But no, lymphatic drainage is not some magical detox button that suddenly fixes your entire existence 😂
And then there is the other enormous piece of the puzzle:
STRESS.
You can stretch your shoulders every damn day, but if your nervous system thinks you're currently being chased by a sabre-toothed tiger because you've got work, kids, bills, relationships, emails, deadlines and seventeen other things happening… your body may still be going:
ABSOLUTELY NOT. WE ARE BRACING FOR IMPACT.
And life is hard sometimes.
There has never been a point in human history where everything was perfectly peaceful and stress-free, and there probably never will be.
The goal isn't to somehow create a life where nothing difficult ever happens.
The goal is building a body and nervous system that can cope with difficult things without living permanently in survival mode.
That means strength.
Movement.
Sleep.
Recovery.
Good food.
Hydration.
Massage.
Breathing.
Laughing.
Getting outside.
And doing things that genuinely fill your cup.
Because taking an hour for yourself isn't frivolous.
Going for the walk, sitting in the sun, seeing your friend, reading your book, gardening, exercising, having the massage, turning your bloody phone off for an hour…
those things ACTUALLY matter.
They can be the difference between handling tomorrow's stress reasonably well and completely losing your s**t over someone using the wrong font. 😂
So if you're doing the work and still feeling tight, sore or exhausted sometimes:
keep going.
Your body isn't a machine you “fix” once.
It is something you continuously care for.
And maybe all that “love yourself” stuff isn't cheesy new-age nonsense after all.
Maybe it's actually just basic maintenance for being a human. 💚
The article below explains the relationship between movement and lymphatic drainage really simply and is well worth a read 👇
What if I told you that one of the most effective ways to enhance your workouts has nothing to do with lifting heavier or running faster? It has everything to do with supporting your lymphatic system. One thing I always remind my clients is this: movement is medicine for your lymphatic system. Every...
