Our gardening team have just completed the pruning of a 200 tree hazelnut orchard, with the prunings being chipped for the new garden beds at IDEA Services and the larger branched put aside for a biochar burn. All set for a bumper hazel nut harvest. Great work, team!

🌱 Garden Survival Challenge — Week 3 Update!
This week our Good Lives Wairarapa crew rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into some BIG garden building jobs — and we made heaps of progress!

We built our no‑dig garden beds, finished putting together three raised beds, and added trellises to two of them so our beans and peas can climb high this spring.
We also filled all the beds with a fresh soil mix and gave our compost piles another good turn to keep them cooking nicely.

Also, the broken windows in the greenhouse have been fixed and the seeds we planted a few weeks ago are beginning to sprout... so exciting.

Next Thursday 20th August, we’re back for another Working Bee — to continue turning this budding garden project at Idea Services in Masterton into a thriving food paradise. Watch this space! 🌿🌼🥦

Another busy afternoon on the Garden Survival Challenge at IDEA Services. Second turn of the compost, making way for the first raised garden bed. A team effort to construct the final garden bed, which might need a slight alteration with one end slightly wider than the other. Chris is not sure how that happened. And the greenhouse team got the seeds going for our spring planting.

Another great afternoon setting up the vege garden at IDEA Services as part of the Garden Survival Challenge. Great to have the students from Wairarapa College and Ponatahi Christian School. The compost heap we set up last week had heated up to 45 degrees. Josh and Steff also heated up to a similar degree getting our macrocarpa garden beds in place!

Congratulations to our fantastic cooks who stepped up to the Burger Challenge yesterday and turned out some exceptional burgers: a delicious minted lamb steak burger from Leslie's team, a truly crunchy chicken burger from Nicola's team; super substantial Kahutara beef burgers from Dylan's team, a delicately flavoured gurnard burger from James's team and a spectacular paua burger from Hazel's team. A fantastic day out at the hazelnut orchard with tree-croppers, where Eric and Annette Cairns introduced us to an amazing array of wood-crafting tools and techniques that can be used to turn hazel prunings into works of art. Proceeds from the event were donated to Good Lives Wairarapa.
