Wellington Kirtan Collective In kirtan one or more persons sit in a circle, with a few musical instruments such as mridang, manjeera, dholak, harmonium, sitar, tampura, tabla, etc.

and sing the name of the divine in one tune, one rhythm, and at one time. When, by the attractive power of kirtan, minds are tuned toward this process, the bliss of kirtan flows through all. The essential thing is to sing with feeling, so that devotion and joy are communicated to all. This is more important than producing technically correct sounds. Just like any of the practices of Yoga, we don’t practice because we like or dislike them or for the immediate benefit even though sometimes these are forthcoming. We practice for what comes after, what gets moved, changed and released by the practices themselves when stillness returns. Sweetness of voice is definitely a desired quality of kirtan, but it has not got such fantastic appeal if the heart behind the voice is not open and happy.......read more ....by Rishi Nityabodhananda Saraswati.

🕉️ In Loving Memory of Selwyn 🕉️
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend Selwyn, our much-loved bass player in the Kapiti Kirtan Collective.
Selwyn joined us in 2021 when our kirtans moved to Lotus Village. He began by bringing his bass along and playing unplugged, gradually plugging in, turning up the volume, and adding his own riffs to our devotional chanting... occasionally surprising us with a perfect Pink Floyd bass line!
He soon became our go-to person for the acoustic set-up, time and time again being the first to arrive and the last to leave. A man of few words, Selwyn was humble, sincere and deeply devotional. His quiet steadiness, generosity and commitment helped weave our group into the Kirtan Collective we are today.
Selwyn's presence, his music and his devotion will be deeply missed. He remains in our hearts, our prayers and our mantras.
At Selwyn's request, we will offer two mantras in his honour at his funeral on Thursday, 1pm at Kapiti Coast Funeral Home. While these are usually sung as call-and-response, we will sing them together in unison, as one collective prayer for him. 🙏
May the mantras carry him in love. May he be held in peace.
With love and gratitude,
Kapiti Kirtan Collective

A little reminder of what’s coming…

Sunshine. Singing. Dancing. Laughter. Quiet moments. Kids running around. Late-night kirtan. Shared meals. New friendships. Old friends. A bit of magic. ✨

MEET JASMIN ~ EMBODIED MOVEMENT

After our Akhanda Kirtan, we heard you…“We wanted to MOVE!”

So this time, rather than moving into a sound journey and lying down, we’re making space to let the energy of the chanting move through the body.

We’re delighted to welcome Jasmin Amrita to facilitate Embodied Movement ~ a gentle, soulful movement experience inspired by the ecstatic dance tradition she facilitates in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Jasmin’s Dance Medicine invites us into the ritual of being fully with the body, the music, the people and the dance (or stillness) that naturally arises.

For Kirtan Fest, she’ll be creating a softer, more spacious journey ~ an invitation to move, explore, release and connect.

Like a wave…slowly beginning…building…moving through you…and gradually settling again.

Feet on the earth and the freedom to move in whatever way feels right.

And yes… there will still be that ecstatic dance magic that Jasmin loves ~ just held in a gentler container, allowing us to transition beautifully from the depth and devotion of Akhanda Kirtan into embodied movement.

12 DAYS TO GO… OUR SPRING EQUINOX GATHERING

We’re getting so excited for our Spring Equinox gathering... a beautiful coming together to celebrate the turning of the seasons, the return of light, and the creative, life-giving energy of the Goddess. ✨

This time we’re holding a collective intention to explore Goddess-inspired kirtan...bringing our voices, hearts and bodies together through sacred sound.

We’ll chant 108 rounds of Aim Hrim Kleem, allowing the repetition, and vibration to take us deeper into our intention for the coming season…and then let the chanting move through us. Super happy to have Shane Hamill join us this time.

And yes…there will be ecstatic dance again, with subs this time so we can keep ourselves uplifted to the max.

And, of course, we’ll feast together again on Gaurā’s amazing dosas ...because what better way to celebrate our lovely community than with delicious food shared.

Kirtan • Mantra • Goddess • Dance • Dosas • Community

Come and join us as we welcome spring, raise our voices, move our bodies and celebrate the beautiful energy that arises when we gather with intention.

Tickets are necessary (so Gaura can make the right amount of dosa batter).
