EQUINE DENTISTRY UPDTATE
Equine Dentals in your area this month … book a place today!
15 January – PALMERSTON/WAIKOUAITI
22 January – OAMARU
29 January – MIDDLEMARCH

A bit of an equine update! I hope everyone is enjoying riding this summer and managing the grass growth alright. There are some challenges to be had with the green flush that we keep getting after the rain (good for the farmers, not so good for our ponies and horses!).

I’ve been enjoying working with the Veterinary Centre team over the last 6 months and seeing a range of equine cases. For those who don’t know me, I have post-grad qualifications in equine dentistry and my dental service involves sedation of horse, oral examination with light and mirror, and rasping using a power float. I have found some new clients have reservations about sedation- my sedation protocol is very safe, and the benefits are that we can provide a higher level of dental care which has lots of flow on benefits. If you want to know what is going on in your horse’s mouth, then we really need to sedate. If there are health concerns, then sometimes I address those rather than sedating.

I can also do dental radiographs but only at our clinic facilities. These images can be so helpful in working up tricky cases!

I’m organising a few dental runs in the following weeks: Palmerston/Waikouaiti on Wednesday 15 January, Oamaru on Wednesday 22 January and Middlemarch on Wednesday 29 January.

If people are willing to bring their horses to a central location, we can do a discount (at least 6 horses per location), otherwise I am happy to go from property to property. Please pm me to arrange an appointment

After a very long maternity break, Liz Paton BVSc is finally getting back into some equine dentistry! Liz is excited to have joined the Veterinary Centre Ranfurly (Blue Cross Vets) team. Liz will be doing 1-2 days of dental work each month as well as her mixed vet role, in the Oamaru area as well in the Maniototo. The Veterinary Centre will be aiming to organise group bookings which makes it more economical for you and efficient for us. You can either host some friends at your property, or a group day at a local venue can be arranged.
As winter kicks in this is a good time to get teeth sorted and help your horse or pony make the most of their winter feed. If you would like to book in please contact your nearest Blue Cross Veterinary Centre. There is a long waiting list but the Veterinary Centre will endeavour to fit you in as soon as possible.

Bit overdue to update this page… I am on maternity leave and may be taking a year or two off. Sorry to those who were on my waiting list earlier this year- The past 12 months have been really challenging with health issues! Over the winter I helped write exams and mark for the Manzcvsc equine dentistry exams which was a good review time but hard work! Also made me realise how limited I am in terms of utilising my knowledge without having X-ray and stocks. Maybe one day! all the best for the season everyone and I will update this page when I am returning to work.

I’m coming to Oamaru on Friday 21 January if anyone would like to book in. 🐴🙂

Hi everyone, hope you are all coping well with lockdown. Just wanted to let you all know that while we are in level 4 lockdown, vet services are an essential service when there is urgent care needed - e.g. a horse in pain or unwell that may suffer if not seen by a vet. However non-urgent procedures such as routine dentals are to be post-poned until we have dropped lock down levels. Looking forward, I am excited to be working in with Vet Equine Otago Ltd, in Mosgiel - I can now offer radiographs and extractions as they are kindly allowing me to use their facilities and support team. I’m also moving towards providing more general equine services - general health, lameness, gelding surgeries etc; with the support of the Vet Equine Otago team. So I’m looking forward to when we get Corona virus under control as I’m sure you all are too!

I will be heading over to the Maniototo for dental work on Friday 30th July - if anyone would like horses/ponies seen please get in touch. Group bookings of 6+ in one location - flat rate of $120/pony or $140/horse, otherwise additional mileage charged and split between properties on the day. 👍🐴

I felt pretty stoked recently to be working on this incredible stallion, Derrynasagurt Silver (Class 1 Irish Draught, imported from Ireland). A beautiful horse and so well behaved, I enjoy meeting all sorts of horses but this one was a real thrill. Thanks Tracy Crossan!

I’m very happy to say that I have recently attained MANZCVSc qualification in equine dentistry - a post-graduate qualification which reflects a high level of knowledge and competence in the area studied. It’s been great for pushing me to extend my knowledge of the horse’s mouth and head and how they interact with the whole system. I’m looking forward to putting all this into practice in the coming months - keep those tricky cases coming!

I’m booking dentals in at the Oamaru Racecourse for Saturday 10th and Saturday 17th July - please let me know if you would like to book anything in. Fees are the same as before for these group bookings - $120/pony and $140/horse, allowing for 45 mins to sedate, examine the mouth with a mirror and torch, and then do corrective rasping as needed. Look forward to seeing some more horses! (Photos below are from a workshop I did a few years ago - so no one local! Just showing how important an oral exam is!)

Have been really enjoying doing a few dental days in the last few weeks, I just love meeting the horses and ponies, big or small! Even the tricky ones are a great learning opportunity and I haven’t had one I couldn’t manage yet! I’m planning on doing another day at the racecourse in June, will put a post out once have a day sorted.

20/05/2021

I have a space tomorrow morning for two dentals at the Oamaru racecourse 9-10.30am, due to a cancellation- can anyone jump in?
