Thyroid Health: The Nutrients Your Thyroid Needs to Thrive

Your thyroid may be small, but it has a big job. This butterfly-shaped gland helps regulate metabolism, energy production, mood, temperature regulation, digestion, and hormone balance. To produce and activate thyroid hormones efficiently, your body relies on several key nutrients.

Some of the most important nutrients for supporting healthy thyroid function include:

🌿 **Iodine**
Iodine is essential for the production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. While iodine deficiency can impair thyroid function, more isn't always better. Excessive iodine intake may aggravate certain thyroid conditions, particularly autoimmune thyroid disorders. Good food sources include seafood, eggs, dairy products, and iodised salt.

🌿 **Selenium**
Selenium plays a crucial role in converting the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active hormone T3. It also helps protect the thyroid from oxidative stress. Food sources include Brazil nuts, seafood, eggs, and poultry. As with iodine, balance is important, as excessive selenium can be harmful.

🌿 **Zinc**
Zinc supports thyroid hormone production and communication between the thyroid and brain. Low zinc levels may contribute to reduced thyroid function. Good sources include oysters, beef, pumpkin seeds, legumes, and nuts.

🌿 **Iron**
Iron is needed for the enzymes involved in thyroid hormone synthesis. Low iron stores may impact thyroid function, particularly when combined with other nutrient deficiencies. Sources include red meat, legumes, spinach, and lentils.

🌿 **Vitamin A**
Vitamin A supports thyroid hormone production and regulation. Colourful vegetables such as carrots, pumpkin, kumara, and leafy greens can help provide this important nutrient.

🌿 **Vitamin B12 & Vitamin D**
These nutrients don't directly produce thyroid hormones but are often important for energy, nervous system health, and immune function. Deficiencies can sometimes occur alongside thyroid imbalances.

At Nourishe Botanicals, we believe nutrition is one piece of the thyroid health puzzle. A balanced diet rich in whole foods, quality protein, healthy fats, vegetables, seafood, nuts, seeds, and adequate minerals can help support optimal thyroid function.

To further support your skin, avoid foods that can aggravate it.

Foods such as high sugar intake will spike your insulin and cause inflammation, processed foods add extra burden to the skin barrier, alcohol can dehydrate and requires detoxification support, and for some people, dairy may also trigger acne.

We make a herbal range called Beautiful skin that are drops to support skin health, and our beautiful detox & metabolism infusions for further support detoxification pathways, if you would like some extra support. Or please book a consultation for comprehensive care.

Beyond your diet, your skin's hydration really matters. Ensuring you are drinking adequate water &/or herbal teas, eating an anti-inflammatory diet, managing stress to reduce inflammation, looking at your microbiome, eating fermented foods and foods rich in prebiotic fibre, sleeping well for overnight skin repair, and using good-quality skincare.

Here is one of my favorites, our Nourishe Face Cream. This formulation is anti-aging, contains herbal extracts high in Vitamin A, C, D & E for supporting collagen & provides soft, dewy, hydrated skin.

Our face cream offers real hydration, strong barrier support, anti-inflammatory herbs, pigment-calming licorice, & deep nourishment. Great for dry or normal skin, redness-prone skin, uneven tone, post-acne marks, and mature skin needing comfort.

Your skin relies on a steady supply of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats to repair, protect, and regenerate.

1. Healthy Fats for Hydration and Elasticity

Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain the skin’s lipid barrier, keeping it supple and hydrated while reducing inflammation. Include foods like:

- Fatty fish (salmon, sardines)

- Flaxseeds and chia seeds

- Walnuts

2. Antioxidants for Protection

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that contribute to premature aging and skin damage. Focus on:

- Berries (blueberries, strawberries)

- Leafy greens (spinach, kale)

- Bright vegetables (carrots, capsicum)

3. Vitamin C for Collagen Production

Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and skin repair. Great sources include:

- Citrus fruits

- Kiwifruit

- Broccoli

4. Zinc for Healing and Clarity

Zinc supports immune function and plays a key role in wound healing and acne management. Find it in:

- Pumpkin seeds

- Legumes

- Whole grains

5. Vitamin A for Skin Renewal

Vitamin A helps regulate cell turnover and prevent clogged pores. Sources include:

- Sweet potatoes

- Carrots

- Dark leafy greens

For June, make the most of 25% off Food Sensitivity Testing.

For new clients, you will need to have an initial consultation first; for existing clients, please touch base.

Food sensitivity assessment is completed as part of a consultation to help identify dietary factors that may be contributing to digestive symptoms. The information gathered in the consultation can support personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations aimed at optimising digestive health and reducing the impact of symptoms such as bloating, irregular bowel motions, digestive discomfort, and food-related reactions. When we get your results back, we will include this information in your ongoing plan.

During consultations, we also explore factors that may influence digestive wellbeing, including stress, dietary habits, gut health, and overall lifestyle. Where appropriate, individualised support and recommendations will be provided as part of your care plan.

This type of EAV testing does not imply that an allergy is present; it looks at food sensitivities. The food sensitivity test has been carried out using an Electro-Acupuncture machine (EAV), which measures the changes in electromagnetic energy when the hair sample is exposed to potential allergens/irritants.

Eating Foods for Skin Health: A Guide to Nourishing Your Glow from Within
Healthy, radiant skin isn’t just about what you put on your body—it’s deeply influenced by what you put in it. From a naturopathic perspective, the skin is a reflection of internal balance, particularly gut health, inflammation levels, and nutrient status. Rather than chasing quick fixes, supporting skin health begins with building a nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foundation through food, its in your choices of foods for healthy skin.

The Skin–Gut Connection
In naturopathy, the concept of the “gut–skin axis” highlights how closely digestive health and skin function are linked. When digestion is compromised or the gut microbiome is imbalanced, inflammation can manifest externally as acne, eczema, or dull, reactive skin.

Supporting digestion and maintaining a healthy microbiome is often the first step toward clearer skin.

Fermented foods have been part of traditional diets for thousands of years, yet they’re experiencing a modern resurgence and for good reason. From a naturopathic perspective, these foods play a powerful role in supporting digestion, gut health, and overall well-being.

But what exactly are fermented foods, and what do they actually do in the body?
