The spine isn’t out of place.

It’s braced and protected from moving in ways the brain thinks could harm it.

You feel that protection as pain and stiffness.

An adjustment suddenly restores movement. If the brain recognises that movement is safe, it can drop some of that protection.

But only if that protection is no longer needed.

The big shift for me was realising the problem wasn’t really the spine.

The spine is part of a much larger stability system linked to every arm and leg movement.

So I stopped focusing on adjusting the spine and started experimenting with sequences of arm and leg movements instead.

Think of it as brain input rather than exercise. Input that clarifies if bracing is still needed.

And they reset the same things I used to adjust.

That changed everything.

Because now resetting didn’t require someone else to do it to you.

You could do it yourself.

I eventually developed a routine that resets these stability chains in just a few minutes.

That’s why I left chiropractic after 28 years and stopped getting adjusted after 53 years.

I’m 55 now. I chose to work as a courier while I help people discover a different way to help themselves.

Because I believe too many people rely on ongoing help for something they may be able to manage themselves with about the same commitment as brushing their teeth twice a day.

I traded giving adjustments for teaching movements.

How are they even remotely the same?

For nearly 30 years, I could adjust someone’s spine and immediately feel a change in movement and muscle tension.

Eventually I started asking a different question.

What had actually changed?

The adjustment hadn’t strengthened anything. It hadn’t healed anything in those few seconds.

It had given the nervous system a powerful movement stimulus, and something about the way the body was protecting had changed.

That led me to experiment with movement.

I used spinal movement and muscle bracing as my feedback and tested different combinations of movements through the hips, legs, shoulders and arms.

I found certain movements could change the same restrictions I had previously been adjusting.

That completely changed how I saw the problem.

Instead of trying to change the spine, I started trying to change what the brain was doing to the spine.

Our arms and legs don’t move independently of our backs. They use connected chains of muscles to control movement and stabilise us all the way back towards the spine.

I found that moving and gently tensing through these chains in particular ways could prompt unnecessary bracing to let go.

And because you can do that yourself, you can repeat it.

That’s the part I think matters most.

Instead of waiting until something hurts and treating it as an isolated problem, resetting gives you a way to regularly influence your overall protective state.

Over time, the goal isn’t just to release today’s tight back.

It’s to gradually reduce how much unnecessary protection your brain brings into tomorrow.

I left because I’d found something I believed worked better in the long term: teaching people how to reset these patterns themselves.

That changed everything for me.

What started as a way of influencing the same spinal changes I was looking for with an adjustment eventually became something completely different.

A simple routine people could do themselves.

And importantly, repeat.

Because I now believe repetition is a huge part of changing the protective bracing patterns our brains can keep running long after that level of protection is needed.

Is it a muscle back problem or a spinal back problem?

Often, they’re part of the same thing.

The brain uses muscles to brace and protect the spine. When that bracing becomes excessive, spinal movement can become restricted.

That’s why approaches targeting the spine and approaches targeting the muscular control of the spine can both help.

I targeted the spine for 28 years as a chiropractor and helped a lot of people.

I changed direction because I wanted a way to give the brain more frequent input than I could through adjustments.

Resetting is something you do yourself as a short routine.

And in my own testing, the full routine, particularly when repeated twice a day, produced more consistent changes than my adjustments.

Why so frequent?

The brain is constantly predicting and responding to potential threats. Injury, stress, fatigue, previous experience and even ordinary movement can all influence how much it braces.

Sometimes that protection can persist when it’s no longer useful.

Resetting is designed to help the brain let go of unnecessary bracing.

And repetition matters because you’re not just trying to change the muscles once.

For years I thought posture was mostly about muscles, joints and alignment.

After nearly 30 years as a chiropractor, I came to a different conclusion.

I now think the brain is constantly adjusting our posture and movement based on what it predicts we need in that moment. Sometimes those changes are brief. Sometimes, when they’re repeated often enough, they quietly become our normal.

I don’t think protective bracing is only about trauma.

It can also be built from everyday experiences, habits, predictions and repeated responses that gradually become automatic.

I also don’t think these patterns happen one muscle at a time.

The brain organises movement through linked stability patterns that influence the whole body. Looking back, I now believe that’s what I was repeatedly influencing when I adjusted the spine.

That realisation changed everything.

Instead of trying to restore movement by adjusting joints, I started looking for ways people could reset those protective movement patterns themselves.

That journey eventually became Neuromotive Reset. A three-minute reset routine that replaced my adjusting and ultimately led me to leave chiropractic.

I’m still learning.

These aren’t conclusions I reached overnight. They’re the result of thousands of observations that forced me to keep questioning my own model.

The psoas isn’t special because it stores stress.

It’s special because the brain frequently recruits it as part of its protective bracing system.

That’s why so many people feel immediate relief when they stretch it, massage it or lie over a foam roller.

But here’s what I kept seeing over 28 years as a chiropractor:

The release often doesn’t last.

Sometimes the psoas is driving the pattern.
Sometimes it’s responding to the diaphragm.
Sometimes the glutes.
Sometimes the piriformis.
Sometimes the upper body.

In other words, the psoas is often part of a much bigger protective strategy.

That’s why I stopped chasing individual muscles and started mapping the movement patterns the brain uses to brace the spine.

The goal isn’t simply to release the psoas.

It’s to help the brain decide it no longer needs to keep switching it back on.

Building something from scratch at 55 wasn’t part of my life plan.

If you’d asked me ten years ago, I thought I’d still be a chiropractor until I retired.

Life had other ideas.

The strange thing is, I don’t really miss adjusting people.

I miss the relationships. I miss seeing people improve. I miss watching someone walk out smiling after they’d been struggling for years.

What I don’t miss is knowing they’d probably need to come back again.

That was the question I could never stop asking myself.

Why do these patterns keep returning?

That question eventually led me away from chiropractic and towards Neuromotive Reset.

Today I spend my mornings delivering parcels and the rest of my time building something I believe could help far more people than I could ever see in a clinic.

Some days that’s exciting.

Some days it’s exhausting.

But every message from someone who’s moving more freely, sleeping better or getting back to doing something they love reminds me why I started.

I don’t know exactly where this journey will end.

I just know it’s worth continuing.

Your brain protects your spine by creating stabilising muscle patterns.

The hip flexors are an important part of that system. When the brain keeps them braced, they can limit movement through the legs, pelvis and lower back.

Releasing them is often the easy part.

Helping the brain keep them released is what takes repetition.

Resets like this can be repeated throughout the day, giving your brain regular opportunities to decide whether it still needs that level of protection.

Over time, that repetition can help the hip flexors stay more relaxed.

Because the hip flexors are part of a larger stabilising pathway, releasing them can sometimes ease tension well beyond the hips. They connect into the front of the spine and can influence muscle tension all the way up to the neck.

Before you start, turn your head to each side and notice how it feels.

Then do the reset and check again. You might be surprised by what changes.

This isn’t stretching or strengthening.

It’s a neurological reset.

Don’t force the movement. If it hurts, make the movement smaller.

Changing those habits also requires repetition.

That’s something I could never provide seeing people every few weeks.

So instead of trying to become a better chiropractor, I spent years trying to make the process simple enough for people to do themselves.

That journey eventually became Neuromotive Reset.

It’s a good thing our brains never stop protecting us.

The goal isn’t to stop protection.

The goal is to help the brain use the lowest level of protection necessary for the situation we’re in.

And to do that, people need a simple way to reset those protective patterns themselves.
