This is young Miriam, daughter of our woman leader Anne Hewago who is also the Team leader for the Hauslain S*k Korona awareness program that is going on in Kutubu LLG, Southern Highlands.
Before the awareness program, Miriam was too scared to get vaccinated but that changed after the program. Miriam made a bold decision to get vaccinated so she can protect herself, her family members and others in the community. She also feels she can protect her school mates as well. The key messaging shared in the communities is helping many families and individuals make informed decisions in how to care for themselves

The choice is yours to make.

Nuipela Pasin: The "New Normal"
A new way of living that makes basic hygiene and safe distancing a part of our new culture as individuals, as families and as communities. It means adopting behaviours and actions that are consistently practiced to reduce risk of Covid-19 and other infectious diseases.
One way of building a healthy lifestyle is having a nutritious meal. Choose wisely the right type of food that can help build your immune system.
Having a healthy body and healthy mind builds a strong and healthy community that can beat coronavirus.

Home Remedies are good for your body too.
An amazing story and testimony from one of our members- Jukuli Kapiako. She is from Mapuri Heights, Komo district in Hela Province.
Jukuli is one of the very first in her community to get vaccinated because she felt it was important for her as a Village Birth Attendance volunteer. She needed to protect herself, her family and the people especially women she was helping out during labor.
After getting vaccinated, she went around with the doctor and nurses from Para Clinic to do more awareness on Covid-19. They went into the villages and promoted key messages on ways of protecting themselves and their families.
Some of the key messages they raised in the awareness was home remedies.
She told families, if you don’t want to get vaccinated then you must follow some of these rules to protect yourselves.
- Drink a cup of hot water or water mixed with lemon and ginger in the mornings. Take ginger, lemon and chilies with your water or when preparing food if you can every day.
- Wash your hands at all times after attending to other things, clean around your house and yard and wash your clothes always to maintain your hygiene.
Through her awareness, 10 people in her community went and got vaccinated. All this falls back trust. People in a community will only listen and follow when they have that trust.
She brought with her a bag of lemons to Port Moresby just recently to share with her relatives. The family she is currently living with didn’t know how to mix the lemon and ginger water so she taught them and has been encouraging everyone to at least drink a cup of hot water or with lemon and ginger every morning.
Jukuli has been a true champion, she has helped deliver over 200 babies before getting vaccinated. And after vaccination, she has delivered 25 healthy babies and has committed to continue to do what she loves doing, and that is helping her people.
Jukuli said, I have 9 grandchildren and I want them to be protected from this sick Coronavirus, I am sharing what little knowledge and experience I have to my people so they can make informed decisions.
She is appealing to kind donors who can support the work she does in her community by donating the following:
- A Solar light, gum boots, Buckets, Teapot, Themos and mosquito nets.
Your support to her community work will truly make a difference and help another family.

My name is Luke Fandol. I would like to share my testimony of my experience with covid-19.
Two months ago, I started feeling the symptoms of covid-19 but was fearful of going to the hospital because of what some of my family members and people in the village were saying. The whole village was filled with fear of going to Mendi Hospital because they heard that the covid-19 patients were been treated there. But after thinking about it, I decided to go and check for myself.
I found out that the section treating covid was separated from the main clinic which is really good.
I got attended to by the health workers who did some test on me and the results came out positive so they gave me medication and some very good advice to take back and apply at home.
They told me to drink hot cups of water, steam everyday and eat lots of fruits. I would spend almost K14 each day on fruits. I would drink 7 cups of hot water and steam every day, though it took 5 weeks to fully recover, I am very happy to have overcome this sickness. The home remedies are very good to take at home always, I saw how it helped me.

I want to thank APNG: WLN team for visiting our community to sit with us and create awareness on basic information at the community level where we can understand more what covid-19 is.
In the past, we’ve had teams of people representing different groups coming and telling people in the community to get vaccinated without proper and clear awareness about the vaccine. This created a lot of misconceptions and caused fear and anxiety among the people, even some of them thought it was poison.
But with this kind of awareness going out into the community and sharing of basic but very good helpful information on what corona virus is, it will definitely change the mindsets of what our people have been thinking about. I beat covid-19 and I know many of my people after listening to this and getting clear information will be able to overcome fear and anxiety to beat covid-19 in our communities. Thank you very much for coming to our community.

As community leaders, we have a responsibility to our members to give factual and correct information about Covid-19 so they can make informed decisions. Whether it's to live healthy and support their natural immunity or boost their immunity through vaccination, our job is to make information available, their job is to make a decision based on what information they get to protect themselves, their family and community.

Knowledge is power. Our people need community engagement, Hauslain to Hauslain toktok on COVID 19 before we talk about the vaccine.

Here is the Kerema LLG Town Manager Mr. Michael Maravillah in Kikori with the Kikori and LLG Manager Mathew Warato and the Kikori West LLG President and his Ward Councilors after the information session citing his reasons why he felt inclined to be vaccinated.

Advancing PNG: Women Leaders Network (APNGWLN) sees the need for proper community messaging on COVID-19 to settle the minds of our community members so they can think clearly to decide on the protective measures, either the Nupela Pasin, use locally available remedies and or take COVID-19 vaccine. Hauslain Toktok S*k Korona Awareness, is the COVID-19 awareness strategy using simple but familiar words through key influential community members and women, household by household, and through a Social Media Campaign under the name Hauslain Toktok. The community awareness is a sit-down conversation approach where community is engaged in a dialogue around COVID-19 to understand their level of understanding on COVID-19, what information is already in the community and the community’s perception on COVID-19. And in communities where people want to know more, we provide our Hauslain Toktok Messaging and also extend invitation to the provincial Health Authorities to provide detailed COVID-19 awareness and vaccination uptake should the community be open to it.

The Social Media Campaign, 'The Hauslain Toktok – S*k Korona’ recognizes the importance and role that social media plays in disseminating information within our country.

Through this program and our social media campaign, APNG:WLN hopes to act as a bridge in conversation and discussion between our people, local communities and national agencies such as the National and Provincial COVID-19 taskforce(s).
It is our wish to see an increase collaboration between our communities, key government agencies and their partners to ensure our country and our people receive the information they need to make informed decisions to protect themselves.
