A 20-year-old woman named Xiao Yu from Tainan, Taiwan, was rushed to Chi Mei Hospital after she developed a high fever and severe pain in her lower back. At first, she thought it was just a normal illness, but the pain became so intense that she needed emergency medical care.
Doctors performed scans and were shocked by what they found. Her right kidney was badly swollen and filled with hundreds of kidney stones. There were more than 300 stones, ranging from 5 millimeters to 2 centimeters in size. Doctors said they looked like tiny steamed buns packed inside her kidney.
To remove them, surgeons performed a minimally invasive procedure called percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The operation was successful, and doctors removed all of the stones.
When they looked into the cause, they discovered that Xiao Yu rarely drank plain water. She disliked the taste of water and instead drank sugary bubble tea and fruit juices every day. Over time, her body became chronically dehydrated. Without enough water, minerals in her urine became highly concentrated and slowly formed hundreds of stones inside her kidney.
Doctors said this condition can become more common during hot weather because people lose more water through sweat. They warned that sugary drinks cannot replace plain water and encouraged everyone to stay properly hydrated.
Xiao Yu's painful experience became a reminder of how important a simple daily habit can be. Drinking enough water may seem small, but it can help protect your kidneys and prevent serious health problems that may require surgery.
