“Be careful.” Is that really a control measure? 🤔

A good HIRAC control should be specific, actionable, and verifiable.

If you can’t verify whether it was implemented, make it more specific.

PLANNED ≠ EXISTING. 🔎

If a control is only written in the plan but not yet implemented, it is not an existing control.

Your HIRAC should reflect what is actually in place today.

Some messages remind you why you started. 💚

A former trainee reached out from the Middle East and shared how the things he once learned in training are now part of his everyday work in the Oil and Gas industry.

HIRAC. JSA. JHA. Daily audits. Real hazards. Real responsibilities.

For a trainer and mentor, there is something deeply fulfilling about knowing that the lessons didn't stay inside the training room. They traveled with him. They became part of how he works.

To my former trainees and mentees—wherever your careers have taken you—keep learning, keep applying, and keep protecting the people you work with.

Messages like this truly make my day. 💚

Train well. Apply well. Make a difference.

CONTROL ADDED. Do both L & S automatically go down? 🤔

Not always. A control may reduce the likelihood while the potential severity remains the same.

Ask: What did the control actually change?

OUR HIRAC TUTORIAL IS FILLING UP! 🌿

We now have confirmed participants for our September HIRAC Tutorial—and we're happy to see professionals from different backgrounds joining us.

Some already have OSH experience.
Some are just beginning to learn HIRAC.

That's exactly why this tutorial is designed to be practical and step-by-step.

We'll start with the basics, then work our way through:

UNDERSTAND → IDENTIFY → ASSESS → CONTROL → ACT

No memorizing definitions just for the sake of it.

The goal is to help you prepare a HIRAC that is clear, logical, and one you can explain.

“Use PPE” isn’t always the best first answer. 👷

A good HIRAC asks: Can we eliminate, substitute, or control the hazard at the source first?

Think beyond PPE. Choose controls that actually reduce the risk.

**SAME HAZARD. SAME RISK? 🤔**

Not necessarily.

Two workplaces can have the **same hazard** but different levels of exposure because of the controls actually in place.

In the graphic, both floors are wet.

But in **A**, access is blocked until the floor is dry.

In **B**, people continue walking through the wet area.

So before assigning a Likelihood rating, don't just ask:

**“Ano ang hazard?”**

Also ask:

**How often are people exposed?**
**What controls are already in place?**
**Are those controls actually effective?**

This is why we shouldn't simply copy risk ratings from another HIRAC.

**The number should reflect the actual workplace conditions.**

HIRAC QUICK CHECK 🔎

Hazard identification looks simple—until you're the one completing the HIRAC form. 😅

Look at the situation in the graphic.

Which one is the HAZARD: A, B, C or D?

Drop your answer in the comments before checking what everyone else says. 👇

One useful question when identifying a hazard:

“WHAT can cause the harm?”

Getting this right matters because your hazard → consequence → risk assessment → controls should tell one logical story.
