Reorientation and Return Demonstration on Basic Anthropometric Measuring Skills to Tabuan-Lasa Barangay Health and Nutrition Workers: The Series

4 of 4

In preparation for the upcoming 2026 Operation Timbang Plus (OPT Plus), a Reorientation and Return Demonstration on Basic Anthropometric Measuring Skills was successfully conducted for the Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) of Bubuan Island, Tabuan-Lasa, Basilan last February 09, 2026 at Babag Multi-Purpose Hall, Bubuan Island.

The activity was spearheaded by the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) Basilan โ€“ Nutrition Division's Ms. Lea Mae Lajot, NDDP In-Charge of Tabuan-Lasa and Maluso, in close coordination with the Tabuan-Lasa Nutrition Office and the Tabuan-Lasa Municipal Health Office led and supported by the Nutritionist-Dietitian II and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO), and Officer-in-Charge - Municipal Health Officer, Mr. Edison C. Ballaho.

Participants included BHWs and BNSs from the barangays of Babag, Boloh-Boloh and Suligan as well as RHU health staff like Nurses and Midwives in-charge of each respective Barangay Health Station (BHS). The activity aimed to enhance and standardize the skills of frontline health and nutrition workers in conducting accurate anthropometric measurements essential for reliable OPT Plus data collection.

During the session, Ms. Lajot provided a comprehensive discussion and hands-on demonstration on the proper procedures in measuring height, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). Emphasis was placed on correct positioning of clients, proper use and calibration of weighing scales and height boards, accurate reading and recording of measurements, and common errors to avoid during data collection.

A return demonstration followed, where BHWs and BNSs actively performed the anthropometric measurements under supervision. Each participant was guided and corrected as needed to ensure proper technique and adherence to standard protocols. This interactive approach helped reinforce learning and boosted participantsโ€™ confidence in conducting measurements independently.

The activity concluded with a brief synthesis and reminders on the importance of accuracy and consistency in anthropometric measurements, as these directly affect the quality of nutrition data and the identification of nutritionally at-risk children in the community.

Overall, the reorientation and return demonstration strengthened the capacity of Saluping Island BHWs and BNSs, ensuring their preparedness for the effective implementation of the 2026 Operation Timbang Plus and contributing to improved nutrition monitoring and intervention planning in Tabuan-Lasa.
