In Davao, rice isn’t just food. It’s a culture. It’s how we celebrate, how we grieve, and how we show love. In a Filipino household, saying "no" to rice means explaining yourself at every single table.
But in 2017, I did the unthinkable. I quit rice. Cold turkey.
Before that, I was a regular at any spot with an "unli-rice" sign. My diet was a celebration of everything convenient and nothing intentional—tons of noodles, pancit canton, corned beef, and processed snacks.
Taking rice off the table was a radical decision I made before I even fully understood why. But my body confirmed it instantly. Today, if I touch rice, it triggers immediate stomach cramps and acid spikes. My body’s chemistry was already ahead of my mind's theology.
Don't get me wrong—the rollercoaster was real. Removing rice didn't magically fix my relationship with food. I still stress-ate. I still reached for the wrong things. But a small, seismic shift had occurred in the dark.
I’ve learned that God rarely gives you the whole blueprint at once; He asks for one specific act of obedience before He reveals the next step. It reminds me of Hebrews 11:8, which says:
"By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going."
Quitting rice was that step for me. I didn't know where it was leading, but it was a seed of discipline planted long before I knew I would ever build Kairos Habit Lab.
It’s been almost nine years now. No rice. What felt like a massive sacrifice in a Filipino home turned out to be the first stone laid in a foundation I am still standing on today. It proved to me that transformation doesn't require you to see the whole staircase—it just requires you to take the first step.
So, let me ask you: What is the one thing you know you need to let go of—but haven't had the courage to drop yet?
