I often get asked about what oils to avoid using on small children.

While this list is a a good starting point, it is most important to do what you are comfortable with. It’s always important to trust our intuition with our children so if you prefer not to use a specific oil on your kids or dilute further than another mom then that is ok!

🌿A few safety tips when using essential oils with children:
* It is not advised for children under the weight of 44 pounds to ingestion essential oils.
* Keep essential oils stored out of reach of small children.
* Do not add undiluted essential oils to the bath.
* Do not instill essential oils in the nose of children.
* Do not apply essential oils topically to mucous membranes.
* If experiencing adverse reaction, apply carrier oil to dilute further and discontinue use.
* Be mindful of applying photosensitive essential oils topically.
* If diffusing, diffuse in large, well-ventilated room for short intervals of time.
* DILUTE DILUTE DILUTE! Do not apply essential oils ‘neat’ to children. Dilute according to age. (Confused about dilution? Get my free dilution guide in profile)

Some of the oils on this list are precautionary due to case reports of using the essential oil or chemical constituent in unsafe ways (Ex: instilling 1,8 cineole within nose of children). Some of the essential oils are on this list due to probable or potential acute toxicity risk shown either in humans or animal models. Some essential oils are on this list due to being high risk for skin sensitization. All of this information is based off of Robert Tisserand’s book “Essential Oil Safety”.

It’s important to understand the context of safety risk and you can always reach out to me with questions on a particular oil.

Aromatherapy can be extremely helpful and beneficial in supporting a child’s mental, emotional and physical health. It’s important to also use essential oils safely with children.

A HISTORY YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD BEFORE

In 1984 a lady from Zurich, Switzerland gave me a portfolio about essential oils. “How much do you know about essential oils?” she asked.

I said, “You know, I’ve used tea tree oil and have never been impressed.”
She said, “There are a lot more essential oils than just tea tree oil. And there are many grades of oils.”

When she said that, a light bulb came on in my head, and I thought: “This makes sense because there are many different grades of herbs, which is one of the reasons that I quit buying herbs from distributors and across the counter; they didn’t work.” They would not work for what I was doing, so we had gone back to setting up our own apothecary, gathering herbs, and making our formulas ourselves.

That night when I was at home, I opened the portfolio that she had meticulously translated from French to English; for the person who was going to be helping her sister. I started reading how European doctors had been studying essential oils and had discovered that the oils contain oxygenating molecules. They believed, from their studies, that essential oils may increase cellular oxygen as much as 21 percent. That was quite significant. I got really excited.
