During the Balik Swela press conference at City Hall Hour, Dr. Imelda Degay raised concerns about one of the most common practices among Filipino parents, which is packing processed meats in their children's lunchboxes.
She shared that these processed meats have long been classified by the World Health Organization as Group 1 carcinogens, meaning they are confirmed cancer-causing substances. She also noted that cholesterol found in animal-based foods contributes to cardiovascular diseases, the number one cause of death among Filipinos, and that cholesterol buildup in blood vessels can begin as early as 2 years old.
She further encouraged a shift toward more plant-based food choices, especially during celebrations, as high meat consumption also contributes to environmental problems. While balance is still key, with health organizations suggesting 3-5 servings of meat daily, being aware of what we eat begins in the food we provide to our children.
