May kasabihan na, "It takes a village to raise a child."

Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.

13 August 2026---The National Nutrition Council (NNC) XII convened members of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Regional Networks for its 2nd Semester Meeting held at Habi Hotel, Koronadal City. The meeting brought together 17 regional SUN network members to discuss current nutrition initiatives, review previous commitments and strengthen collaboration toward improved nutrition outcomes in the SOCCSKSARGEN Region.

In her welcome remarks, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae S. Fernandez, RND, RN, MDM, emphasized the importance of sustaining the commitment and active participation of SUN members in advancing nutrition initiatives in the region. She underscored that strengthening the SUN Network requires continuous collaboration, regular coordination and shared responsibility among stakeholders to ensure that nutrition remains a collective priority.

Among the major agenda items were updates on national and regional nutrition initiatives, the 2025 National Nutrition Survey, strategic planning for 2027 activities and updates from the SUN Network. These discussions provided an opportunity for members and SUN convenors to share developments, identify areas for collaboration and align their efforts toward addressing nutrition concerns in the region.

The meeting concluded with the identification of next steps and ways forward for the regional SUN networks, including regular attendance in SUN meetings, participation in NNC activities, finalization and submission of the revised and notarized SUN MOU from August to December 2026, Adopt-a-Barangay Project collaboration and implementation of 2027 nutrition PPAs based on identified needs and the agreed action plan.

A Collective Commitment to Better Nutrition

Celebrating the Spirit of Unity and Service during Nutrition Month 2026

Municipal Nutrition Action Office
Municipality of Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat

Every July, we celebrates Nutrition Monthโ€”a meaningful occasion that reminds every Filipino that good nutrition is not merely a health concern but a shared responsibility. It is a time to strengthen partnerships, encourage healthier lifestyles, and reaffirm our collective commitment to ensuring that every individual, especially every child, has access to proper nutrition and quality health services.

This year's Nutrition Month Celebration, with the theme "Nutrisyon at Kalikasan, Ating Pangalagaan," showcased the Municipality of Lambayong's unwavering commitment to promoting both nutrition and environmental stewardship. Its success was not the achievement of a single office or individual but the collective result of collaboration, dedication, and a shared commitment to public service. Meaningful and lasting progress in nutrition can only be achieved through unity, active participation, and sustained community engagement.

At the forefront of this success is the steadfast leadership of Hon. Francis Eric E. Recinto, Municipal Mayor of Lambayong. His unwavering support for health and nutrition initiatives has enabled the Local Government Unit to continuously invest in programs that enhance the well-being of every Lambayongan. Through his vision of a healthier municipality, he has inspired greater community participation, strengthened local nutrition governance, and fostered meaningful collaboration among stakeholders.

We likewise extend our sincere appreciation to Hon. Duane Jade Abalos, Chairperson of the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Health, for her unwavering commitment and continuous support for the municipality's nutrition program. Her dedication to advancing health and nutrition initiatives, coupled with her steadfast advocacy for policies that promote the welfare of the community, has been instrumental in strengthening local nutrition efforts.

Equally deserving of recognition is our Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Rex Selvido, whose guidance, encouragement, and leadership continue to sustain the municipality's health and nutrition programs. Through his commitment to quality healthcare, the Municipal Health Office remains steadfast in delivering responsive and people-centered services to every barangay.

To our Designated Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, Sir Jhon Nhard thank your for the commitment for nutrition program. Every monitoring visit, every nutrition education session, and every community initiative reflected to our collective desire to build a healthier Lambayong.

To our Department of Health Nutritionist-Dietitian, Ms. Jovy Paculio Ebon, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication, active involvement, and steadfast support in the implementation of the municipality's nutrition program. Your technical expertise, guidance, and continuous mentorship have been invaluable in strengthening the capacity of our nutrition partners and ensuring the successful implementation of nutrition interventions at the local level.

We also express our sincere appreciation to maam Nedz Niล„al, RN, our Department of Health Development Management Officer, for her continuous technical guidance, valuable recommendations, and unwavering support in strengthening the municipality's nutrition program. Her expertise has been instrumental in ensuring that our local initiatives remain aligned with national goals and standards.

Our heartfelt gratitude likewise goes to all Barangay Captains in 27 barangays of the Municipality of Lambayong for embracing the Nutrition Month celebration with enthusiasm and dedication. Your active participation demonstrates that promoting nutrition begins within our communities and flourishes through collective action.

Special recognition is likewise extended to our Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), whose commitment and passion remain the backbone of community nutrition. Their relentless efforts in conducting growth monitoring, providing nutrition education, and assisting families at the grassroots level continue to make a lasting impact on the health of our children and communities.

We also honor our Rural Health Midwives, Department of Health Human Resources for Health (DOH-HRH) for Lambayong, and our dedicated Barangay Health Workers (BHWs). Their tireless service, compassion, and professionalism ensured that every Nutrition Month activity was implemented successfully and reached the people who needed it most. Their work exemplifies the true meaning of public service.

As we conclude this year's celebration, let us remember that Nutrition Month is more than a month-long observance. It is a continuing movement that calls upon every sector of society to work together in addressing malnutrition, promoting healthy lifestyles, and empowering communities through education and sustainable interventions.

Together, we have demonstrated that a healthier future is possible through shared responsibility, compassionate leadership, and community participation. Indeed, nutrition is everyone's responsibility, and together, we can nourish not only our bodies but also the future of our municipality.

In compliance to Executive Order 51 or The Milk Code and its Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations, donations of breastmilk substitutes including infant formula, powdered milk and other milk; feeding bottles, teats and commercial baby food are not allowed and that these should not be part of general distribution of emergency food packs. In times of disasters and emergencies, artificial feeding using milks other than breast milk is not safe due to lack of supply of clean water, fuel for sterilization and boiling, utensils, among others.

DOH Administrative Order (AO) 2006-0014 or the โ€œNational Policies on Infant and Young Childrenโ€ indicates that in times of crisis, breastfeeding is the first and best feeding option for infants and young children and that mothers and babies should remain together and provided with support to be able to feed appropriately even under difficult circumstances. Likewise, DOH AO 2007-0017, โ€œGuidelines on the Acceptance and Processing of Foreign and Local Donations during Emergency and Disaster Situationsโ€, states that โ€œInfant formula, breastmilk substitutes, feeding bottles, artificial ni***es, and teats shall not be items for donation."

No acceptance of donation shall be issued for any of the enumerated items.โ€ Breastfeeding and continued breastfeeding should be promoted, protected and supported but most especially during disasters and emergencies.

As a general rule, the DOH prescribes the feeding options for infants and young children in difficult circumstance:

(1) breastfeeding is the first and best option for infants,
(2) expressed breastmilk, fed by cup;
(3) breastfeeding from healthy wet nurse; and
(4) human milk from milk bank, fed by cup.

Should these options become unavailable, the last option is to feed by cup infant formula (unlabeled) which should be only under the supervision of health and nutrition workers and prepared.

Violations should be reported to the local health office or at http://www.mbfp.doh.
