The conversation around retinoids is far more nuanced than social media makes it seem.
Yes, vitamin A derivatives can improve the appearance of fine lines and texture. But irritation is also one of the most well-documented side effects associated with chronic use: peeling, dryness, burning, barrier disruption, and increased sensitivity.
The European Union recently moved to restrict cosmetic vitamin A levels in skincare because cumulative exposure matters. Meanwhile, in the U.S., stronger formulas continue to be marketed aggressively with very little conversation around long-term skin compatibility.
And this is where Functional Beauty differs.
I do not believe skin should have to stay inflamed in order to appear youthful.
After nearly 30 years in beauty, I’ve learned that healthy-looking skin is not built through chronic irritation. It comes from supporting the barrier, reducing inflammatory load, improving mitochondrial health, supporting circulation, protecting collagen, nourishing the body properly, and choosing ingredients the skin can actually tolerate long-term.
The beauty industry normalized irritation to the point that many people now believe stinging means a product is “working.”
