What is the difference of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism?
Both involve your thyroid gland 🦋 but they’re opposites.
Hypothyroidism = underactive thyroid
The thyroid doesn’t make enough thyroid hormone. Think of it as your body running too slow.
Common signs:
- Fatigue, feeling cold all the time
- Weight gain, even with normal eating
- Dry skin, hair thinning, constipation
- Depression, brain fog, slow heart rate
Hyperthyroidism = overactive thyroid
The thyroid makes too much hormone. Your body runs too fast.
Common signs:
- Anxiety, feeling jittery or hot
- Unintentional weight loss, increased appetite
- Rapid heartbeat, tremors, trouble sleeping
- Frequent bowel movements, sweating
Hypothyroidism Hyperthyroidism
Hormone level Too low Too high
Metabolism Slowed down Sped up
Weight Gain Loss
Energy Low, sluggish Wired, restless
Temperature Cold intolerance Heat intolerance
Both are diagnosed with blood tests checking TSH, T3, and T4 levels. They’re treatable, but need different approaches.
If you suspect thyroid issues, it’s best to check with a doctor or endocrinologist for proper testing and guidance.
