Non-compassionate self: We used to see flounders as nothing more than seafood—something humans could catch, cook, and enjoy.

We never questioned the massive fishing nets dragged across the ocean floor, the hooks used to capture them, or the industries that profit from their lives.

We saw them as food, not as living beings.

Compassionate self: Now, we see beyond the fillet on a plate. We see aquatic animals whose lives matter beyond their usefulness to humans.

They are hunted, captured, bred, and killed to satisfy our appetites, all because society has normalized treating them as commodities rather than individuals.

We have developed advanced technologies to locate and harvest them, yet we rarely stop to question our entitlement to their lives.

Even when fishing is regulated to protect populations, sustainability does not automatically mean compassion.

The ocean is their home, not our supermarket. Flounders are not products that exist for our consumption, entertainment, or profit.

Being vegan means challenging the belief that animals exist for human use and recognizing that their lives matter, too.

Compassion begins when we stop asking what we can get from animals and start asking why we believe we are entitled to take from them. 💚🌏
