More and more Filipinos are being diagnosed with pulmonary embolism.

Sometimes it starts with something people brush off: shortness of breath, chest discomfort, leg pain - usually caused by prolonged sitting, recent surgery, long travel, or even an underlying clotting condition. Then things escalate fast.

That’s why timely recognition and rapid intervention matter so much.

At Cardinal Santos Medical Center, one patient was able to receive urgent treatment thanks to the prompt referral of Dr. Regidor Encabo. Dr. Arvin Yumul, together with Dr. Joseph Ramirez, MD and IC Fellow Dr. Arvin Bautista, immediately proceeded with intervention to restore pulmonary flow and stabilize the patient.

Cases like this are a reminder that pulmonary embolism is treatable, especially when patients are brought to the right team at the right time. 🙏🏻

A blood clot in the lungs can feel like “pagod lang” & “hingal lang” — until it suddenly isn’t.

A pulmonary embolism (PE) happens when a blood clot travels to the lungs, blocking blood flow and making it harder for the body to get oxygen. It can become life-threatening very quickly, which is why recognizing the signs early matters.

Signs and symptoms to never ignore:

• Sudden shortness of breath
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Fast heartbeat
• Dizziness or fainting
• Coughing up blood
• Leg pain or swelling

Don’t scroll past this. Save it — you might remember these signs when someone needs help the most. 🙏🏻

Another day, another pulmonary embolism case — this time at St. Luke's Medical Center Global City.

A patient in his early 30s presented with PE and required urgent intervention. Led by Dr. Dr. Kristoffer Tanseco together with Dr. Andre Tojino and the SLMCGC Cathlab, the team deployed the Penumbra Indigo System and was able to aspirate significant chunks of clot in just a few passes.

âś… Fast recognition.
âś… Fast action.

The kind of teamwork that changes outcomes when every second counts. 🙏🏻

Did you know that a pulmonary embolism with acute clot burden can now be managed at the Philippine General Hospital?

A patient presenting with significant obstruction of pulmonary circulation was successfully treated through Penumbra Indigo aspiration thrombectomy, allowing restoration of blood flow.

The case was led by IC Dr. , with fellows Dr. JC Pilapil and Dr. Inocian, together with the UP PGH Cathlab team.

What makes this worth highlighting is not just the outcome, but the setting.

As a government hospital, it serves as a lifeline for patients who often arrive with limited options—but not limited care.

Today, advanced pulmonary embolism management is not just possible in select centers.

It’s being done where it matters most: in public hospitals (PGH, SPMC, PHC & NKTI), for patients who need it most.

Many people still think advanced stroke and peripheral vascular treatment is only available in private hospitals.

Today, more government hospitals in the Philippines are equipped with modern thrombectomy systems like Penumbra that can:

• Help restore blood flow faster
• Remove dangerous clots more efficiently; and
• Improve chances of recovery & limb salvage

Advanced care shouldn’t only be available to a few.

Because every kababayan deserves access to life-saving technology when every second matters. 🇵🇭

Not all heroes get to spend Mother’s Day at home. 🌸

Last Mother’s Day at Southern Philippines Medical Center,
the SPMC VIR Team answered an urgent call for a mother suffering from Acute Limb Ischemia. What initially seemed like a straightforward stat thrombectomy quickly became more challenging after discovering a massive clot burden during the procedure.

Using Neurospine’s Penumbra System, the team moved lightning fast to restore blood flow and save the affected limb. This was the kind of case where every minute truly mattered.

And this is exactly why timely access to endovascular treatment is so important, especially for patients in Mindanao who deserve the same level of treatment available anywhere else in the country.

To the SPMC VIR Team (Dr. Ding Bangoy, Doc Tim Snchz, Dr. Benjamin Ong, Dr. AJ Lpre, Dr. Joshua Managuelod & Dr. Marc Marcus), the hospital administration, the cathlab staff, and everyone who spent Mother’s Day serving patients instead of celebrating at home — we see you, and we’re proud to support the work you do every day. 🙏🏻

Labor Day may be a holiday for many, but for doctors handling emergencies, the work never stops. 🙏🏻

Last May 1 at Manila Doctors Hospital, a pulmonary embolism case quickly became a race against time. Without immediate intervention, the patient was at significant risk of further deterioration.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Doc Allan Gumatay proceeded with mechanical thrombectomy using the Penumbra Indigo System to rapidly remove the clot burden and restore pulmonary flow.

The procedure was performed with the assistance of Dr. Joseph Ramirez, Dr. Allan Lim, and Dr. Dats Guinzon.

A holiday for most, but for teams like this, it was another day spent saving a life.
