October is Mental Health Month and let us start with a little throwback.

Three years ago, I had the opportunity to be interviewed by the WVSU College of Medicine Student Council about mental health among medical students. At that time, I was still a resident, learning and navigating my own journey in medicine.

Looking back at this interview now, I realize how much things has changed since then. Yet, many of the things we talked about remain just as relevant today.

I remember being on the other side of the conversation, still finding my way through residency, learning how to care for others while also learning how to care for myself. It’s a little humbling to look back and realize that some of the lessons we share with students are lessons we continue to learn ourselves.

Although the interview focused on students, the message is not limited to them. Mental health matters to all of us. Whether we are students, residents, professionals, parents, or simply trying to keep up with the demands of everyday life, we all have moments when we feel tired, overwhelmed, or uncertain.

Perhaps this Mental Health Month is also a good reminder to pause, check in with ourselves, and give ourselves the same kindness and understanding that we so readily offer to others.

Here’s to continuing the conversation and to remembering that taking care of our mental health is part of taking care of ourselves.

Today marks the end of a meaningful 6 week journey with these students from the West Visayas State University College of Medicine. Over the past weeks, we explored their views on values, reflected on their perspectives, and clarified them along the way.

Personally, I am always happy and grateful to take part in this activity every year. Twelve years ago, I was once in their place, and this same experience helped shape me as I journeyed through medical school and beyond.

To these future doctors: keep your hearts aflame towards your journey to become physicians! May you carry with you not only the knowledge and skills of medicine, but also the values, compassion, and purpose that will guide you throughout your journey.

Last July 25, 2026, I participated in SIMBAKalusugan at the Parish of the Immaculate Concepcion in Oton, Iloilo.

SIMBAKalusugan is a program of the Department of Health in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Church that aims to bring healthcare services, particularly mental health services, to local church communities. Through this partnership, we are able to make mental healthcare more accessible while promoting holistic well being among our faithful.

Last June 27, 2026, I had the privilege of serving as the moderator during the Iloilo Medical Society's 24th Annual Convention for the insightful session of Dr. Amantillo and Dr. Chin-Balajadia on the topic, "Medicalization of Normal Suffering: Where Good Medicine Ends and Ethical Harm Begins." It was an enriching discussion on an important issue in modern healthcare.

Grateful for the experience and learnings shared in this session.
