A 2022 study showed its antidiabetic activity is highest in the leaves. It has been used by different cultures to lower labor pains. It is known for its antipyretic properties. Our own Negritos used its leaves directly on eczema, psoriasis and rashes.

Ito ang nakita ko sa Valencia, Negros Oriental noong pumunta ako sa kanilang Sunday market. Maraming mga halaman doon, katulad nitong Kolitis (𝘈𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘴, non-native), na habang sa ibang bahagi ng Pilipinas ay inaakalang damo lamang, dito sa Valencia ay ibinebenta bilang gulay sa halagang 15 hanggang 20 pesos kada tali.

Ang Kolitis ay tinatawag na wild amaranth sa Ingles. Kung ihahanda ito, parang spinach lang din. Masarap itong kainin kapag isteamed lang o kaya ay ihalo sa salad.

SOLAR-POWERED SAFE WATER💧

Filipino researchers developed a portable system capable of producing up to 2,000 liters of potable water in nine hours using solar energy.

SAFEWATRS, developed by the Department of Science and Technology’s Industrial Technology Development Institute, was created for communities where clean water and reliable electricity can be difficult to access, particularly during disasters and in remote areas.

The system can treat freshwater from rivers, lakes, springs and collected rainwater. During testing using water from Laguna Lake, the treated water met the mandatory parameters evaluated under the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water.

SAFEWATRS is already being used outside the laboratory.

A unit deployed in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur was reported to serve around 180 households. In Madalag, Aklan, another unit began supplying drinking water in 2026 to at least 50 households in an Akeanon-Bukidnon indigenous community. DOST has also reported deployments in several other parts of the country.

The technology received a Silver Award at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in Switzerland in 2024.

Its potential is especially relevant in the Philippines. PSA data for 2024 showed that only 53.1% of Filipino families had access to safely managed drinking water services, while 6.5% experienced at least one period when drinking water was insufficient because none was available from their source.

A machine powered by sunlight will not solve the country’s water problems on its own, but SAFEWATRS gives communities another way to produce safe drinking water in places where conventional infrastructure may be limited or disrupted.

In Japan, there is a practice called Shinrin-yoku, which translates literally as "forest bathing." It doesn't mean swimming in a river or getting rained on. It means walking slowly through a forest, breathing deeply, and letting the environment do something to your body that scientists spent decades trying to measure.

Dr. Qing Li is the man who measured it.

A clinical professor at Nippon Medical School in Tokyo and president of the Japanese Society of Forest Medicine, Li has spent over 20 years studying what happens to the human body when it spends time among trees. What he found goes well beyond "nature is relaxing."

Trees, it turns out, are doing something deliberate. To protect themselves from bacteria, insects, and disease, they release airborne chemicals called phytoncides into the air around them. When humans walk through a forest and breathe that air, those chemicals enter the body through the lungs and trigger a measurable immune response. Specifically, they increase the activity and count of natural killer cells, the immune system's primary weapons against viruses and tumors.

In Li's studies, a single day of forest bathing produced immune-boosting effects that lasted a full week. Three days in a forest produced effects lasting a month. The effects begin after as little as 20 minutes.

The benefits don't stop at immunity. Li's research found that forest bathing lowers cortisol levels, reduces blood pressure and heart rate, decreases anxiety and depression scores, and improves sleep quality. One study found that adding just 10 trees to a city block made residents feel as good as receiving a $10,000 pay raise or being seven years younger.

It's time we rethink how we've experienced the use of plastic and look back at the original and more natural ways we can sustain ourselves.

You pick up a bundle of pechay at the supermarket. It’s wrapped in a thin plastic sleeve that you’ll probably throw away minutes after getting home.

Now imagine if that same pechay came wrapped in a fresh banana leaf instead.

For many Filipinos, that wouldn’t be a novelty. It would simply be bringing back a practice that has quietly survived in wet markets, roadside stalls, and kitchens across the country.

As plastic waste continues to choke rivers and landfills, banana leaves are emerging as a simple solution hiding in plain sight.

MORE THAN JUST TRADITION

Banana leaves have always been part of Filipino food culture. They wrap suman, bibingka, and puso, line serving platters, and bundle vegetables in local markets.

They’re also remarkably good at preserving fresh produce.

Their naturally waxy surface locks in moisture, preventing leafy vegetables from drying out. Unlike airtight plastic, banana leaves allow produce to breathe, reducing the trapped humidity that speeds up spoilage. Studies also suggest they contain natural polyphenols with antimicrobial properties that help slow bacterial growth.

Instead of suffocating vegetables, banana leaves help keep them fresh.

LESS PLASTIC, MORE COMMON SENSE

A plastic wrapper used for a few hours can remain in the environment for centuries. Banana leaves naturally decompose within days or weeks.

They don’t create microplastics, require complicated recycling systems, or leave behind toxic residues.

Replacing even a portion of supermarket plastic packaging with banana leaves could significantly reduce the amount of single-use plastic entering waterways and dumpsites.

Best of all, consumers wouldn’t need to change their shopping habits. The only difference is what goes into the trash afterward.

GOOD FOR FARMERS

Banana plants continuously produce large leaves, making them a renewable resource in a country where bananas grow almost everywhere.

Selling leaves can provide farmers with an additional source of income beyond the fruit itself. Preparing them for packaging requires little more than cleaning, trimming, and proper sanitization—far less energy than manufacturing plastic packaging.

It’s a local solution built from a local crop.

ASIA IS ALREADY PROVING IT WORKS

Several retailers have already shown that banana leaf packaging can succeed commercially.

Thailand’s Rimping Supermarket drew worldwide attention after replacing plastic wraps with banana leaves tied using biodegradable bamboo strips.

Major retailers in Vietnam, including Lotte Mart, Big C, and Saigon Co.op, soon followed by wrapping herbs, leafy greens, and vegetables in banana leaves instead of plastic.

The Philippines has also seen initiatives from Dizon Farms, while many wet markets have continued using banana leaves without ever calling it an environmental campaign.

Sometimes the most sustainable ideas are simply the ones we never abandoned.

THE CHALLENGES ARE REAL—BUT SOLVABLE

Banana leaves still need proper cleaning and sanitization before they can be used commercially. Their varying sizes also make automated packaging more difficult, while fresh leaves require a reliable supply chain.

These are practical hurdles—not impossible ones.

The search for sustainable packaging often revolves around futuristic materials and expensive innovations.

Yet one of the most promising alternatives has been growing in Filipino backyards all along.

Perhaps the next time you buy vegetables, the greenest choice won’t be what’s inside the package.

It will be the package itself.
