Maundy Thursday
Holy Thursday, commonly called Maundy Thursday, marks the beginning of the Sacred Paschal Triduum. The term “Maundy” comes from the Latin word *mandatum*, meaning “commandment.”
This word refers to the new commandment that Jesus gave to His disciples during the Last Supper, when He washed their feet as a sign of humility and loving service.
In the Gospel, Jesus declares:
“Mandátum novum do vobis, ut diligátis invicem, sicut diléxi vos.”
Which means:
“I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.”
(John 13:34)
Maundy Thursday reminds Christians of Christ’s call to love, humility, and selfless service, as well as the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood during the Last Supper.
