It’s official. As of May 12, 2026, a landmark global consensus published in The Lancet has officially renamed Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).
Why the change?
The term "PCOS" was scientifically misleading. It focused on "cysts," which are actually just immature egg follicles and aren't even present in everyone diagnosed.
What does PMOS mean for you?
The new name better reflects the complex, whole-body nature of the disorder. Here is the breakdown:
Polyendocrine: Highlights disruptions in multiple hormones like insulin and androgens.
Metabolic: Acknowledges the risks of insulin resistance, weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Ovarian: Keeps the focus on its impact on ovulation, fertility, and menstrual cycles.
While the condition itself remains the same, this shift is a huge step toward better understanding and medical recognition of the symptoms we live with every day.
