Is anger controlling you... or are you controlling your anger?
Do you lose your temper over small things?
Do you regret your words or actions afterward, but find yourself unable to stop in the moment?
As a Clinical Psychologist, CBT Therapist, and Relationship Counselor, I meet individuals every day whose anger has negatively affected their relationships, mental well-being, marriage, and career.
The best part is that anger is a manageable emotion if you learn the right techniques.
Effective Techniques to Manage Anger
1. Take a 10-Second Pause
Before reacting, take a deep breath and give yourself a few seconds. This short pause can prevent lasting damage.
2. Challenge Your Thoughts
Ask yourself:
"Is this situation really as terrible and unbearable as I think, or is my mind exaggerating it?"
3. Practice Deep Breathing
Inhale for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, and slowly exhale for 6 seconds. Repeat several times until you feel calmer.
4. Step Away from the Situation
If your anger feels overwhelming, leave the situation for a few minutes. Take a short walk, drink some water, or give yourself time to cool down before responding.
5. Prioritize Sleep and Stress Management
Fatigue, chronic stress, and lack of sleep significantly reduce emotional control and make anger more difficult to manage.
6. Express Your Feelings in a Healthy Way
Instead of suppressing your emotions or blaming others, communicate using statements like:
"I feel hurt..." or "I feel frustrated..." This encourages healthier and more productive conversations.
Remember: Anger itself is not a bad emotion. However, when left unmanaged, it can damage your health, happiness, relationships, and overall quality of life.
If you find that your anger is repeatedly getting out of control or affecting your personal or professional life, it may be more than just a personality trait. With professional guidance and evidence-based therapy, you can learn healthier ways to understand and manage your emotions.
