The Inspiring Journey of GIMS Gambat & Dr. Rahim Bux Bhatti
From a Two-Room Dispensary to a Medical City
Established in 1934 as a small, two-room rural dispensary, the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) underwent a massive transformation over the decades. It was upgraded to a Taluka Hospital in 1981 and named a Model Taluka Hospital in 1997.
The turning point came in 2003 when the Government of Sindh officially upgraded it to GIMS, later granting it independent, degree-awarding status in 2011. Today, GIMS stands as a world-class tertiary care medical city, renowned for providing pioneering, free-of-cost specialized treatments—including liver, lung, kidney, and bone marrow transplants—to millions of underprivileged patients.
Dr. Rahim Bux Bhatti: The Visionary Leader
The phenomenal rise of GIMS is inseparable from the lifelong dedication of Dr. Captain (R) Rahim Bux Bhatti. Joining the facility in 1974 after serving as an army medical officer, Dr. Bhatti spent over 45 years of tireless service transforming rural healthcare.
Through his unwavering integrity and vision, he turned a basic village clinic into a national landmark of free healthcare, becoming a true beacon of hope and an inspiration for humanity.
