In this session, our Speech Therapist is working on speech sound production using individualized placement and tactile cues:

👅 Helping the child understand tongue placement and movement for the /R/ sound.

👄 Helping the child develop awareness of lip closure for the /M/ sound.

These cues are used carefully as part of therapy to help children understand where and how to place their articulators. With consistent practice, support is gradually reduced as the child becomes more independent. 🗣️💪

👣 Toe-walking in autistic children deserves attention—not panic.

Toe-walking is more common in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but the reason can vary. It may be associated with sensory needs, motor differences, habit, or other underlying factors. Persistent toe-walking can also affect ankle range of motion and gait over time. (AAP Publications⁠)

In this session, we used supported standing on a wedge, attention redirection, and positive engagement to encourage a more appropriate foot position while helping the child tolerate the activity.

Research on interventions specifically for autistic children is still limited, so treatment should be individualized following a proper gait and physical assessment. Pediatric physiotherapy, rehabilitation, orthotic, orthopedic, or neurological assessment may be appropriate depending on the child. (PubMed⁠)

ORAL MOTOR EXERCISES ALONE ≠ SPEECH DEVELOPMENT 🗣️

In Pakistan, many parents believe that oral massage, blowing, and oral-motor exercises alone will make a child speak. But speech development is much more than that.

For meaningful communication, speech therapy should also focus on:

1. 👂 Receptive Language — Understanding words, instructions, and questions
2. 💬 Expressive Language — Using words, gestures, and sentences to communicate
3. 🗣️ Vocal Imitation (Echoic) — Learning to imitate sounds, syllables, and words
4. 👋 Motor Imitation — Learning to copy actions, which supports early learning and communication
5. 🤝 Functional Communication — Teaching the child how to communicate wants, needs, and ideas

✨ Remember: Oral-motor activities can be useful when clinically appropriate, but they should not replace language and communication training.
