What Your Craving Means
Dying for peanut-butter? Needing that sugar fix? Mouth-watering for something salty? When we are craving a food, our body is communicating with us that it is deficient in a certain vitamin. Instead of fighting our cravings, as we've been taught, we should listen to them, as they are a window into our body's needs. Find out What Your Craving is Telling You:
Salty cravings
This could mean you have a mineral deficiency, particularly calcium. Sodium temporarily increases calcium levels in the blood, tricking our bodies into believing you have consumed some of this bone-building vitamin. However, only cheese, yogurt and other dairy products can do the real trick. Your body could also be lacking in potassium (found in bananas) and iron (found in spinach, seeds and shellfish.)
Salt cravings: could mean you're stressed, as our body craves the minerals in salt when we're leading hectic lives. However, table salt and the salt in processed foods is stripped from these essential minerals, which is why we keep wanting to eat more and more. Ever finished a bag of chips and wonder where they all went? Instead try unsalted nuts, fruits and vegetables, all naturally high in the minerals your body is begging for.
Sweet craving: This could be due to a lack of energy, making our body crave that sugar rush. Try sleeping an uninterrupted 8 hours a night. Instead of that cupcake, have some complex carbs like oatmeal that will keep you energized throughout the day. Also check iron levels, as anemia can make one lethargic. An extra-strong sweet tooth could also be due to a deficiency in Vitamin C, so try an orange or grape-fruit and see if the craving subsides. You also may lack chromium, which is found in broccoli, grapes, cheese and beans.
Chocolate craving: You may have a lack of seratonin, the feel-good chemical in our brain. It also could mean a lack of magnesium, found in nuts, seeds, legumes and fruits. If you really need that piece of chocolate, get the anti-oxidant benefits from it by making it dark.
Fast food craving: Drink that water! Your body is ultra-dehydrated and since takeout has an enormously high salt content, your body needs salt so that your cells can hold onto the lost liquids. Stay hydrated so you never feel that crash.
Bread craving: Your brain may be telling you it needs selenium, which is essential in your immune and reproductive system. Try having fish, eggs or even red meat.
