High cholesterol can indeed have a serious impact on your cardiovascular health. When there is an excess of cholesterol in the bloodstream—especially LDL or “bad” cholesterol—it can begin to deposit on the inner walls of arteries. Over time, this leads to the formation of a sticky substance called plaque.
Plaque not only narrows the arteries but also hardens them, a condition known as atherosclerosis. As the passageway narrows, it restricts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart and brain. In more severe cases, plaque can rupture, triggering the formation of blood clots.
These clots can block blood flow entirely, resulting in a heart attack or stroke. Managing your cholesterol through healthy eating, regular exercise, and, when needed, medication is essential to reduce your risk of these life-threatening conditions and maintain good heart health.
