ABA Troubleshooting: “How to Get Your Child to Leave the Playground Calmly”
Leaving a fun place is hard for many children with autism because it means stopping a preferred activity. The goal is to make transitions more predictable, gradual, and rewarding.
Simple Strategies Parents Can Try
1. Give a warning before leaving
Use short countdowns:
● “5 more minutes.”
● “2 more slides.”
● “Last turn.”
Visual timers or fingers can help.
2. Use “First–Then” language
Example:
● “First go home, then snack.”
● “First shoes on, then tablet.”
This helps your child know something good comes next.
3. Make the ending predictable
Use the same routine every time:
● Last slide
● High five playground
● Say “Bye playground”
● Walk to car
Predictable routines reduce anxiety.
4. Offer small choices
Choices give a sense of control:
● “Hop or walk to the car?”
● “Do you want to hold my hand or carry the ball?”
5. Reinforce calm leaving
Praise immediately:
“Great walking!”
“Nice calm body!” You can also reward with stickers, snacks, music, or a preferred activity.
6. Stay calm during protests
If crying or dropping happens:
● Keep instructions short
● Avoid long explanations
● Follow through calmly and consistently
