What is Meningomyelocele?
Meningomyelocele is a birth defect in which the bones of the spine fail to close completely during early pregnancy, causing the spinal cord and its coverings to protrude through an opening in the back. It is one of the most severe forms of spina bifida and may result in weakness of the legs, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and other neurological complications.
Can it be prevented?
Many cases can be prevented through adequate folic acid supplementation before conception and during early pregnancy. Since the neural tube closes within the first few weeks of pregnancy, folic acid should ideally be started before pregnancy is planned.

میننگومائیلوسیل ایک پیدائشی بیماری ہے جس میں حمل کے ابتدائی دنوں میں ریڑھ کی ہڈی مکمل طور پر بند نہیں ہو پاتی، جس کے نتیجے میں ریڑھ کی ہڈی اور اس کی جھلیاں کمر میں موجود ایک سوراخ سے باہر آ جاتی ہیں۔ یہ Spina Bifida کی شدید ترین اقسام میں سے ایک ہے اور ٹانگوں کی کمزوری، پیشاب و پاخانے کے مسائل اور دیگر اعصابی پیچیدگیوں کا سبب بن سکتی ہے۔
اس سے بچاؤ کیسے ممکن ہے؟
اس بیماری کے بہت سے کیسز کو حمل سے پہلے اور حمل کے ابتدائی مہینوں میں فولک ایسڈ کے باقاعدہ استعمال سے روکا جا سکتا ہے۔ چونکہ بچے کی اعصابی نالی (Neural Tube) حمل کے پہلے چند ہفتوں میں بند ہو جاتی ہے، اس لیے فولک ایسڈ کا استعمال حمل سے پہلے شروع کرنا نہایت اہم ہے۔
