The female reproductive system consists of several key parts, including the uterus, endometrium, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Each of these components plays a specific role during the menstrual cycle. Notably, each o***y contains thousands of follicles, which are structures that house immature eggs. These eggs are the female reproductive cells.
Hereโs how the menstrual cycle unfolds:
*Day 1:* The menstrual cycle begins with all the eggs in the ovaries starting to grow and mature. Simultaneously, the body produces female hormones called estrogens. These hormones enter the bloodstream, signaling the uterus to prepare for a potential pregnancy. During this phase, the uterus develops a thick, spongy lining.
*Day 7:* Most of the eggs begin to die off, leaving only one dominant egg that continues to grow.
*Day 12:* The dominant egg releases a significant amount of estrogen, which travels to the brain and activates the pituitary gland. This gland is responsible for producing various hormones, including luteinizing hormone (LH), which triggers ovulation.
*Day 14:* The luteinizing hormone acts on the ovaries, causing the dominant egg to mature quickly and detach from its follicle. One of the fallopian tubes then envelops the follicle, fully opening it to release the egg. This process is known as ovulation. At the end of the fallopian tube, the fimbriaโa group of cellsโcollects the released egg and guides it into the tube. Through muscular contractions, the egg is propelled toward the uterus.
*Day 15:* From this point onward, progesterone is produced in the ovaries. This hormone supports the second phase of the menstrual cycle. During these days, elevated progesterone levels may enhance your energy and productivity. You might also notice a clear, egg white-like vaginal discharge and a heightened desire for intimacy.
*Day 28:* This marks the conclusion of the menstrual cycle, as the body prepares to menstruate.
