Many parents think stimming in children with ADHD or Autism should always be stopped.
But the truth is — stimming is often a natural and important self-regulation behavior.
Children with ADHD/ASD may flap hands, rock, jump, hum, repeat sounds, or move constantly to manage:
✔ sensory overload
✔ stress and anxiety
✔ excitement
✔ emotional regulation
Not every stim is harmful.
As parents, we should not force a child to “sit still” or “look normal” all the time.
Only stop stimming if it is:
⚠ harmful to the child
⚠ unsafe for others
⚠ interfering seriously with daily function
Understanding sensory needs in ADHD and Autism is more important than suppressing behaviors.
Support the child, don’t shame the child.
Early support from an Occupational Therapist can help parents understand safe sensory regulation strategies for children with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
