Pleura Explained | How Your Lungs Move When You Breathe

Did you know your lungs don’t move on their own? 🤯

Each lung is covered by a thin membrane called the pleura, with another layer lining the chest wall and diaphragm. Between them is a tiny space—the pleural cavity—containing a small amount of fluid and a vacuum-like effect.

When your diaphragm and ribs move, the outer layer (parietal pleura) moves with them. Because of the vacuum, the inner layer (visceral pleura) sticks to it—pulling the lungs along. This is how your lungs expand and contract during breathing.

Did you know the pupil is just a hole—and your iris controls its size? 👁️

The iris contains two tiny muscles: one that dilates the pupil (makes it bigger in low light) and another that constricts it (makes it smaller in bright light). This automatic adjustment helps regulate how much light enters your eye, allowing you to see clearly in different conditions.

It’s not just functional—the iris is also what gives your eyes their unique color!

Hyoid Bone Explained | The Floating Bone That Controls Speech & Swallowing

This unique U-shaped structure is suspended by muscles and plays a crucial role in speech, swallowing, and breathing. The tongue rests on it, and the larynx (voice box) hangs from it—moving up and down when you swallow to safely guide food into the esophagus instead of the airway.

Understanding the hyoid bone helps explain how your body coordinates complex actions like talking and eating every single day.
