PAIN LANGUAGE//
It’s hard to define pain – it slips through our fingers, a feeling we can’t fully articulate or visualize. We can uncover the unseen through paint, giving shape to what words and measurements can’t reach. It’s like an alchemy of art and science. Pain isn’t just a condition; it’s a narrative waiting to be told through creativity.

LUSH THREADS//
Mafe Soltero (.soltero) creates fiber sculptures that twist and pulse, capturing the fluidity of time and memory. Abstract forms, wired with precision, shift and morph like faces in a dream. Inspired by Caribbean light, they echo the dance of sunlight on waves — a constant, shifting reflection of colors. Each piece is a tactile map of transformation, a living testament to how we process emotions.

BLUE LIGHT BLUE HEAT//
Research shows that the color of the object and the color of your hand can actually tweak how warm or cold the object feels, flipping the switch on your temperature sense.

Turns out, color can mess with how we sense temperature when we touch stuff. So, a red object or a blue hand? Suddenly, that warm cup of coffee might not feel as warm.

This phenomenon could be linked to synesthesia, where sensory pathways overlap.

🔵🔥

__

TOUCH OF EUPHORIA//
Touch can be a catalyst for dopamine release, becoming a crucial element in our social interactions. During physical contact, neurons in the medial amygdala release dopamine, a brain chemical linked to pleasure, motivation, learning, and memory.

While we know smell and sight matter, social touch might also activate those dopamine highs. Social reward emerges from the joy of connecting with others. The relationship between contact and pleasure spikes is just starting to reveal its depth.

MIRROR LOOP//
Vision is a neural narrative where each image becomes a replication, a reflection of how your brain organizes information.

Art mirrors the real world by mirroring the neural mechanisms through which we see it.

WANDERING MIND//
In the 1950s, Donald Hebb’s lab at McGill University kicked off the first serious study on sensory deprivation. They put 14 college students in soundproof cubicles for two days or more, decked out with gloves and cardboard cuffs to kill tactile sensation, plus goggles that only let in light and dark.

Hallucinations went wild—starting with basic colors, lines, and polka dots and evolving into bizarre scenes like colorful little figures, squirrels marching purposefully in the snow, and even prehistoric creatures roaming jungles.

❄️🐿️

__

SOUNDS FOR PAIN RELIEF//
Research by the National Endowment of the Arts reveals that listening to music can significantly reduce pain, potentially countering the overprescribing of addictive medications like opioids.

Join us next Sunday for the talk Artful Sensing: Addiction to learn more and get lost in the sonic awe.

🌈🐚
