LIGHT or HARD ? The right reflexology treatment -FOR YOU...
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to reflexology. Whether you prefer deeper pressure, gentle touch, or a combination of both, your session can be adapted to you.
Gentle touch isn't simply "less pressure"—it's a different way of working with the nervous system. This is why lighter does not necessarily mean less effective. Sometimes the most appropriate response is not to apply more pressure, but to give the nervous system a different kind of sensory input.
Reflexology often uses firmer pressure to stimulate reflex points. Gentle-touch techniques take another route — working primarily through the nervous system and sensory response rather than relying on mechanical pressure. You could think of it as a neurological “software reset” rather than a mechanical “hardware reset.”
As a reflexologist with over 20 years of experience, I offer both deeper pressure techniques and gentle-touch approaches, adapting each session to your health history, individual needs, comfort level and personal preference.
For certain health conditions and sensitivities, it can be particularly important to adapt the treatment and use a much lighter touch. The aim is always to work respectfully with the individual rather than applying the same pressure to everyone.
For some people, deeper pressure feels beneficial. For others, certain health conditions make it important to use a much gentler approach. This may include people living with chronic fatigue, burnout, trauma, grief or bereavement, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, heightened sensitivity, circulatory or neurological conditions, or those recovering from illness or prolonged stress.
Instead of trying to force muscles or tissues to change, gentle-touch techniques aim to encourage the nervous system to relax, allowing the body to respond naturally.
Research has shown that slow, gentle touch can stimulate specialised nerve fibres known as C-tactile afferents. These fibres respond to soft, calming touch and communicate with areas of the brain involved in comfort, emotional regulation and wellbeing.
This gentle stimulation is associated with the release of important neurochemicals that help support the body's natural relaxation response, including:
Endorphins – the body's natural pain-relieving chemicals, helping to reduce discomfort and promote a sense of wellbeing. Endorphins are not only released when applying deep tissue techniques. 'Lightness' activates the brain's neuro-chemical release via the nervous system directly.
Oxytocin – The release of oxytocin during reflexology treatment gently dilates blood vessels naturally and stabilizes blood pressure. Often called the "calm" or "social bonding" hormone, associated with reduced stress, a slower heart rate and feelings of safety and connection.
Serotonin and Dopamine – neurotransmitters that help support emotional balance, relaxation and a positive sense of wellbeing.
Because every person is unique, every reflexology session is tailored to your health history, comfort level and therapeutic goals.
