OUR LAST CONSORTIUMS MEETING IN COIMBRA, PORTUGAL ☀️

Thankfully, in our last Consortiums Meeting of the DAPAS Project we were able to see each other in person again. We agreed to hold the meeting hybrid because not all partners wanted to travel to another country due to Covid-19. However, it worked great! Some of the partners dialed in on Skype and all others met in Coimbra, Portugal at the Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra. ✈️

The organization here was great, we were well taken care of during the breaks (snacks & coffee), got a guided tour through the city of Coimbra and had a delicious dinner together where we all got to know each other even better. So it was also a kind of teambuilding event. 🍽️

But most importantly, we were able to have good discussions to get ahead in the Project and saw many different presentations from the partners on a variety of topics. We defined our ToDos for the last phase of the Project and were also very motivated by this meeting to reach all deadlines on time and to work together even better in the final phase. 💻 ⚙️

It was a great opportunity for all of us! 😊

DIGITAL LITERACY LESSONS 💻

During June & July, the Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra team has delivered sessions on digital literacy at centres which users participate in the DAPAS project. The session aimed to increase digital literacy skills, encouraging users to use more their DAPAS system, and promote active ageing using new technologies. 🔗

The sessions had three different parts:
- a presentation about active ageing and new technologies
- a practical part in which participants could use the tablets with the staff support
- a game with questions about topics discussed in the session

These sessions increased the users' interest in new technologies as they understand better how it can help in their daily lives and maintain their cognitive functions as well as showed the importance of a facilitator to help older people getting started on using new technologies. ✨

ACTIVITY BOOK - CONTROL GROUP 📖

Due to COVID-19, the planned sessions for the control group of the DAPAS project could not take place. Therefore Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra created a book with cognitive activities and tips on how to keep an healthy and active lifestyle for the participants in the control group. 🎲

The cognitive games included:
📝 Sudokus,
🧩 Word Puzzles,
and many more!

Regarding the tips on healthy and active ageing, it had a wide range of advice from healthy eating 🍎 to easy physical exercises 🏃. This small book provided entertainment and cognitive stimulation during the lockdown phase imposed by the pandemic for participants!

Digital Innovation - whats next?

From the 12th to the 14th of November 2019, the Innovation 💡Congress in Villach 🇦🇹 focused on digital innovation in the future. Business models, products, services as well as current trends and developments were presented and discussed in expert circles. As part of the Innovation Congress, the SmartLiving Forum was held on the second day of the congress. Through the "Call For Posters" of the SmartLiving Forum the DAPAS project was presented by exthex GmbH in the course of a poster walk. The DAPAS project was also exhibited and presented at the Emma – the flexible life assistance booth.

Forever Young Fair 2019 🇦🇹

For two days from 9 to 10 November, the focus at the Graz Exhibition Centre was on the 55+ generation 👵🧓 with the focus on prevention and active living 🕺. An exhibition area offered lots of information for example about comfortable and practical living, mobility and leisure activities in old age. In addition, the target group was also thrilled with a colorful entertainment- and hands-on program. exthex GmbH was represented at this fair with an 80m² booth and informed the visitors about Emma - the flexible life assistant. In addition, we have also provided information about AAL and our ongoing research projects. The DAPAS project has not only attracted the interest of end-users, but has also attracted the attention of companies and service providers in the healthcare sector.

Autumn Fair Graz 🇦🇹 3th – 7th of October 2019

The Graz Autumn Fair is the largest fair in the south of Austria. National and international exhibitors present their products and services in the fields of construction, vehicles, gastronomy, enjoyment, health and wellness, household, shopping, fashion and traditional costumes as well as nations, crafts, living and design.
Emma - the flexible life assistance - was presented under the topic of health with a large booth on more than 60m2. Visitors to the booth were not only informed about Emma, but were also introduced to the topic of AAL and our ongoing research projects in this field. The DAPAS project met with great interest, in particular because of the large trail in three countries 🇦🇹🇱🇺🇵🇹.

AIT takes a leading position in the Austrian innovation system and a key role in Europe 🇪🇺 as the RTO focusing on the key 🔑 infrastructure topics of the future. As a national and international network 🔗node at the interface of science and industry, AIT enables innovation 💡 through its scientific-technological expertise, market experience, tight customer relationships 👥 and high quality research infrastructure. AIT is represented in this consortium by the AIT group “Biomedical Systems” from the Center of Health & Bioresources. The group has been involved in R&D on Active and Assisted 🤝 Living technologies as well as medical research since 1994. In DAPAS, AIT is responsible for the work package 2️⃣ on “Requirements and Specifications” and focuses mainly on well-being and activity tracking.

AAL Practice Conference Graz 2019

On October 11th the second Austrian 🇦🇹 AAL Practice Conference took place in Graz at the Medical University. The AAL Practice Conference took place within the framework of the Network Ageing Medicine 👵🧓 on the topic of "Active and healthy ageing"🕺. Another focus of the practice conference was the opportunities and barriers of AAL solutions based on practical experiences of different companies and industries🏢. exthex GmbH also gave a short lecture on its AAL product Emma and reported on current research. DAPAS was presented here as a good example of a great opportunity to test AAL products on a large scale in practice to learn more about the habits and user behavior of the older generation. The DAPAS project was also presented to a large number of people 👥 and experts from the branch of Health Care and AAL at the Emma - flexible life assistance booth.
The second part of the event was held at the GGZ (Geriatric Health Centre in Graz🇦🇹). Also at this part of the event exthex GmbH presented the AAL solutions Emma as well as new and current research topics and projects.
Also Carina Dantas of Cáritas Diocesana de Coimbra 🇪🇸 was on the conference and gave a lecture, in which DAPAS was also briefly introduced.

6️⃣ eVida Research Group, a research group within the University 🎓 of Deusto Engineering Faculty 🇪🇸, is an experienced, dynamic and diverse team 👥 of telecommunications, electronics and software engineers 💻, physicists, mathematicians 📝 and psychologists. Founded in 2002, the group is committed to research on and development of ICT-based tools, systems and interventions for psychological, social and physical health. Over the last decade, eVida have established close working relationships with key local stakeholders including hospitals, charities, other research groups and ICT companies.
eVida conduct applied research in two main areas. In the field of ICTs for Well-Being, eVida research, design, develop and test tools and systems which enable disabled people and the elderly to live more independent lives. eVida is currently involved in creating apps 📱 and devices for informal learning 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫 and informal learning follow-up services, programmes for person-centred care, and various tele-medicine and tele-monitoring systems. Work in this area has included applied research aimed at assisting groups such as people with intellectual disabilities, people with autism, people with visual impairments, people with hearing impairments👂, and people with multiple sclerosis. In the field of health, eVida specialise in creating diagnostic tools and systems and interventions for people with health problems such as skin and lung cancer, laryngectomy, epilepsy, migraines 👤, dyslexia and bed sores 🛌. This work is based on long term research in the processing of: speech 🗣, ECG, EMG and EEG signals 〽️, and MRI (colon and lung cancer, articulatory description...), neuro fMRI, dermoscopy, pressure ulcers and stroboscopy images.

Our participation in the project is based in serious games ♟🎮 specification, design, and development for the elderly 👵🧓 based on the experience of the research group in health and welbeing.

5️⃣ The New Design University (NDU) is located in St. Pölten/Lower Austria 🇦🇹. The university offers bachelor and master programs 🎓 in the fields of design, technology and business. As an international destination for quality education 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫, NDU trains creative thinkers 💡 who advance social change 🌎 and explore tomorrow’s design’s practice by addressing the interplay of social and technological developments, scientific knowledge and artistic achievements. NDU’s approach in teaching is posed by the aim 🎯 to prepare students 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓 to act as intermediaries and translators of research findings into the language of practical development ⚙️ as well as business solutions. The NDU stands out for its high level of personal supervision, attaching special importance to the combination 🔗 of theory and practice. Imparting business skills is another matter of great importance at the private university in St. Pölten🇦🇹.

During previous projects within the AAL joint program NDU gathered a high level of experience in leading user requirements engineering work-packages applying the user-centred design development process methodology and using as well the ISO 9241-210 standard for the involvement of end-users for the user requirements engineering studies in these research projects 🤝. In particular, NDU’s user-inspired innovation process methodology focuses on preferences in technology acceptance, technology use as well as on preferences of end-users 👥 for aesthetical and emotional product criteria 👌. For the studies with end-users NDU uses methods of on one side qualitative social research and on the other side methods of design research. The use of such a trans-disciplinary research approach aims at creating a "best of both" research methodology to receive extensive data 🔲 about the everyday life routines, wishes and demands of the end-users 👵🧓 of a project.

Within the DAPAS research project NDU contributes to the workpackages on user requirements engineering ⚙️, field trials and business development. Concerning the dissemination and exploitation of the project NDU will contribute to the academic discussion about the synergetic potential of methods of qualitative social research and design research and user research methodologies. Furthermore, NDU will work on the awareness 🐊of end user requirements within all stakeholder parties and on the inclusion of design aspects to the overall project.

Ideable is responsible for Kwido (see more at www.kwido.com ) the international cloud platform for caring elderly people 👥 by accessible and usable mobile devices📲. It both works in promoting independent living at home🏠, social connection🔗, health monitoring, etc. Kwido includes a rehabilitation platform for cognitive impairment based on serious games🎮. Also includes a complete health monitoring platform with even teleconsultation features.
Building Kwido, Ideable has created a design division for working in the field of research and prototyping interfaces for elderly users👵🧓, apart from developing graphical user interfaces for the elderly sector, especially in the R&D division for cognitive stimulation. Ideable is a company focused on eldercare 🤝 sector with broad experience in using technology in the eldercare sector and already has signed agreements 📄 with partners and clients in Spain 🇪🇸, Switzerland🇨🇭, UK 🇬🇧, Argentina🇦🇷, Mexico 🇲🇽, Colombia 🇵🇹 and El Salvador🇳🇮.

How to support the project:
Ideable has worked for many years ⌛️ in analysing eldercare 🤝sector and studying market trends 🌎 and disruptive innovations 💡for this market. Also, creating business models in the European market. So, we will use this experience in creating a business plan 📄for DAPAS and our position in the Silver Economy market for disseminating the project. And will also integrate our existing platform Kwido in DAPAS. In the definition of interfaces for elderly users 🧓👵, apart from Kwido, we will use the guidelines we created in the AAL project zocaalo.eu for creating accessible and usable interfaces.
