Gut-feel interviews might be fast but they don’t build great teams.

I helped a fast-growing startup build their management team.

He was ex-Uber, had global experience, and nailed the interviews. 𝗕𝘂𝘁..

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀, 𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄: “𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.”

Hiring the right people is challenging enough, but what happens when a seemingly perfect candidate becomes an "organ rejection"?

That's exactly what happened to Nicolas Buteau, ex-Head of Recruiting EMEA at Uber, when he joined Booking.com as a Global Head of Executive Recruiting after a lengthy selection process.

On paper, everything looked perfect. The role seemed like a great next step in his career, and both sides were excited about the partnership.

But within months, 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 that despite his experience and skills, Nicolas 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝘁 for Booking.com's environment.

The company valued "staying in your lane", meaning focusing strictly on your defined role. Nicolas, on the other hand, was used to a more creative approach to recruiting.

He thrived on being "out there" speaking at conferences, building brand presence, and going beyond traditional recruitment practices.

"I was very organized, but there's an amount of creativity in recruiting that I needed," Nicolas explained. "That worked in past environments, but it clashed with how things worked at Booking."

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲'𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗹.
