My favorite girl, Pantera, fell down a steep ravine yesterday and isn't doing well today. Since we don't live close to the farm, João slept in our truck at the farm to watch over her. He took a blanket for himself, but Pantera was shivering when he got to her, so he covered her instead. I didn't grow up farming like my husband, so I didn't have a notion of what it takes to get food to my table. I shopped at the supermarket where all the food came nicely packaged and ready to go. I never paused to think that there are people working hard to get that food to my table, because it was so easy. Now it's so real for me. I see my husband unable to sleep because he's worried about an injured animal. So much so that he gets out of his warm bed to go into the winter cold and sleep near his cow. This comes a few days after someone told me that all farmers do here is look through binoculars from the comfort of their homes to count their cows and if they're all there, they just go about their day. This is why we urge people to visit our farm. Visit their local farm. Know if their getting their food from a factory farm or from a farm where the happiness of each animal is a priority. Get a realistic picture of what it truly takes to produce the food that you put in your mouth and that fuels your existence. I promise you'll never think that all we do is sit in a lounge chair looking through binoculars.
