When Misoprostol is All You’ve
Medication abortion without mifepristone.
Mifepristone can be hard to self-source for a self-managed abortion even without forced birthers trying to make it unavailable. So it’s important to know that if a person can’t get mifepristone, it’s also possible to end a pregnancy of up to 12 weeks using misoprostol alone.
Here’s the deal: A person who uses misoprostol alone will need three times as much of it as someone who’s using misoprostol after taking mifepristone. Why? Because without mifepristone to stop the pregnancy and start opening the cervix, the uterus needs more misoprostol to push out what’s in it. So someone using misoprostol alone will need 12 pills of 200 micrograms each, not just 4.
A person who is using misoprostol alone will do this over a single day:
They will put 4 pills of 200 mcgs (or 8 pills of 100 mcgs) under their tongue, let them dissolve for 30 minutes without eating or drinking, then swallow what’s left.
They will wait 3 hours. During this time, they can eat and drink normally.
When the 3 hours are up, they will put 4 more pills under their tongue, let them dissolve for 30 minutes without eating or drinking, then swallow what’s left.
They will wait another 3 hours.
When the 3 hours are over, they will do it again with the last 4 pills.
This protocol works for 85 to 95% of people who follow it. That means 8 or 9 out of every 10 people who use misoprostol alone correctly will successfully have a safe abortion.
