The drop-off after a first session isn't driven by a bad experience.

It's driven by what didn't happen afterwards.

That's not a fitness problem.

How to find a fitness group that actually sticks, not one you'll ghost after two weeks.

Most people try a group once or twice and quietly disappear.

It's not because they're lazy.

It's because they picked the wrong group.

Here's what to look for:

The right size.

Too big and nobody notices you.

Too small and it feels fragile. 10-30 people is the sweet spot — big enough for energy, small enough to feel seen.

Chemistry over programming.

You can adapt to any workout style.

You can't fake a connection with people you don't enjoy being around.

Consistency over intensity.

A group that meets twice a week at the same time will change your life more than a hardcore bootcamp you attend once.

An instructor who builds connections.

A study you probably haven't seen — but should.

MIT researchers tracked 1.1 million runners across social networks over five years.

Published in Nature Communications.

What they found: exercise is socially contagious.

When someone in your network ran 10 minutes more than usual, you ran 3 minutes longer yourself.

Not because of a fitness app. Not because of a push notification. Because of a real person.

And the effect was strongest between people at a similar level, your peers influence you more than elites do.

This isn't motivational fluff.

This is one of the largest exercise studies ever published.
