Al Kharfi Beekeepers Village, Maysan, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦

Deep in the mountains of Saudi Arabia, around 100 km south of Taif, lies one of the most remarkable honey sites we've ever discovered on the Honey Road.

Long before honey became a luxury wellness ingredient sold in boutique stores, it was a way of life. Entire communities depended on bees for survival, and some villages were built around them.

Al Kharfi Beekeepers Village is a centuries-old stone settlement carved directly into the mountainside. Hidden among the cliffs of Maysan, the abandoned village contains an estimated 1,300 beehive niches built into its walls, stacked across multiple levels like a giant honeycomb etched into rock.

What appears at first glance to be decorative stonework was actually a functioning beekeeping system. For generations, residents worked with migrating bees and seasonal flowering cycles, producing the region's prized Sidr honey. Homes, pathways and hives were all integrated into a landscape designed around the movement of bees.

Over time, water scarcity and declining vegetation made beekeeping increasingly difficult. The village was gradually abandoned, but the carved hives remain, preserving the traces of a honey-based way of life that once thrived in these mountains.

For anyone following the ancient Honey Road, Al Kharfi stands as a reminder that honey was not merely food or medicine. It shaped settlements, economies and entire cultures.

One of the world’s most prized honeys is produced in a landscape of alpine meadows, mountain flowers and cold Black Sea air.

Anzer Bali is legendary because it comes from a rare floral region where bees gather nectar from the wildflowers of the plateau. Each harvest is limited, seasonal and deeply tied to the land.

To protect the precious hives from bears, local beekeepers build strong cage enclosures around their apiaries. Among them is Muzaffer, a legendary beekeeper and long-time Honey Road partner who has helped preserve this mountain craft for generations.
