【 Lunar 7th Month 】

The ‘Hungry Ghosts Month’ (中元节）is generally associated with a notion of fear and inauspiciousness of forebodings. Contrary to popular belief, in Buddhism, Lunar 7th Month is known as Auspicious Month.

In Buddhism, Lunar 7th month is not just about placating the hungry ghosts but liberating them from the hungry ghost realms. It is not just a ritual but an opportunity to practice filial piety. A month of great opportunity to accumulate vast merits.

Origin:

The Ullambana Festival (盂兰盆节) , with its roots cited in the 【Ullambana Sutra】, hails back to the story of Maudgalyayana (目犍连), a chief disciple of the Buddha. Maudgalyayana sought to relieve his mother's suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts. Maudgalyayana could not save her despite his clairvoyance power. And turned to Buddha for advice.

The Buddha instructed him to make elaborate offerings to the Sangha of the ten directions on Lunar 15th day 7th Month. With the exceptional powers of the assembled Sangha and the merits from the offerings, Maudgalyayana liberated his mother from the suffering realm. This day is known as the Buddha’s Joyful Day (佛欢喜日).

Ullambana Festival commemorates the day when the Sangha (Buddhist monastic community) completed their summer retreat. It is a day of immense merit and thanksgiving to the Sangha for their prayers and blessings.

In essence, anyone can make offerings to the Sangha (Buddhist monastic community / monasteries) on behalf of their ancestors, parents and karmic creditors. The merit gained from these offerings can be transferred to the deceased, helping to alleviate their suffering in the lower realms. At the same time bring blessings of good fortune, happiness, and well-being to the living. The merit amassed is boundless.
