Last month, we learned about the bold and beautiful Lavandin. This month, we head up into the hills for something crisp, clean and a little wild: the fresh, forest-green scent of Juniper Berry.

Welcome to our Oil of the Month: โœจ ๐‰๐”๐๐ˆ๐๐„๐‘ ๐๐„๐‘๐‘๐˜ โœจ

The Juniper Berry oil used in professional aromatherapy comes from the common juniper (Juniperus communis) โ€” a hardy evergreen shrub that grows across Europe, Asia and North America.

There are more than 50 juniper species, and not all are safe. Savin (Juniperus sabina) is toxic and must never should not be used in aromatherapy. Always check the Latin name on your bottle.

Juniper has a long history of aromatic, medicinal and ritual use dating back thousands of years. The ancient Greeks and Romans used juniper in fumigation and purification rituals.

The Dutch called their juniper-flavoured spirit jenever. Over time, the English shortened genever to gin. The name ultimately traces back to words associated with juniper.

Here is the fascinating part: the juniper "berry" is not a berry at all. Botanically, it is a tiny seed cone with soft, fleshy scales that grow together.

It takes up to two or three years to ripen โ€” turning slowly from green to a deep blue-black. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the ripe cones.

Harvest begins in September and continues through autumn โ€” in the colder mountains, sometimes right into winter. Much of the juniper berry used for essential oil production is still collected from wild-growing plants rather than cultivated plantations.

If true lavender is a soft, floral lullaby, Lavandin is the same song sung a little louder and brighter.

Lavandin is a middle note โ€” fresh and floral at heart, but with a sharper, herbaceous, camphor-like lift on top. That crisp, almost medicinal edge comes from its higher content of camphor and 1,8-cineole. It smells clean, punchy and uplifting rather than sweet and mellow.

Like true lavender, Lavandin is rich in linalool and linalyl acetate โ€” the gentle, calming compounds lavender is loved for. This is why it still carries a soothing, relaxing quality.

The difference is the extras. Lavandin usually contains significantly more camphor than true lavenderโ€”often several times higher depending on the cultivar.

โœ… ๐’๐š๐Ÿ๐ž ๐”๐ฌ๐š๐ ๐ž ๐†๐ฎ๐ข๐๐ž
As aromatherapy practitioners, safety always comes first. Lavandin is generally well-tolerated, but a few points matter:

โ€ข Mind the camphor: Because of its higher camphor content, Lavandin is best avoided around babies, young children, and during pregnancy. When in doubt, choose true lavender or ask a qualified aromatherapist.

Not the same as true lavender: Do not assume Lavandin will behave exactly like L. angustifolia. For deep calm and sleep, true lavender is gentler. For a fresh, reviving lift, Lavandin shines.
Dilute first: Never apply it neat. Always dilute with a carrier oil before it touches skin.

Last month, we savoured our bright, lemony, honey-sweet Melissa โ€” a little burst of sunshine in a bottle. This month, we stay close to the garden and meet the cousin of true lavender: the bold and beautiful Lavandin.

Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) is often sold simply as "lavender" โ€” but it is not the same plant as true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia).

Lavandin is a natural hybrid โ€” a cross between true lavender (L. angustifolia) and spike lavender (L. latifolia). It carries the calming softness of one parent and the sharp, camphor-like punch of the other. Knowing which one is in your bottle changes how you use it.

Lavandin was not planned. In the wild hills of Haute Provence, true lavender grows high and spike lavender grows low. In the middle zone where they overlap, bees carried pollen between them โ€” and lavandin was born.

Farmers noticed some plants were bigger and more generous than the rest. They called them "grande lavande" or "lavande bรขtarde" โ€” the bastard lavender. After the First World War, growers began cultivating it seriously, and by the 1930s it had spread across the south of France.

Here is the fascinating part: lavandin is sterile. Being a hybrid, it cannot make viable seeds. Every single plant must be grown from a cutting โ€” which means every lavandin in a field is a clone of the last.

That is why a lavandin field looks so strikingly uniform: one perfect wave of purple, every plant the same height, the same colour, blooming at the same time. The famous cultivar 'Grosso' was selected and popularised by French grower Pierre Grosso during the early 1970s.

The essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops, harvested at peak bloom across July and August. Lavandin blooms a little later than true lavender, and rewards growers with a much higher oil yield.

Stay with us as we explore more of its scent, its science, and its story. ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know lavender's name comes from the Latin "lavare" โ€” meaning "to wash"?

The Romans scented their baths with it, long before it sat in our diffusers and pillow sprays. Same little flower. Same quiet comfort.

What's your favourite way to use lavender? ๐Ÿ’œ

- Melissa is powerful โ€” always dilute before applying to skin. About 1 drop in 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of carrier oil is a gentle starting point.
- Patch test first.
- In a diffuser, 1โ€“2 drops is usually enough.
- If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or using essential oils with young children, consult a qualified healthcare professional or certified aromatherapist before use.
Simply want to enjoy the aroma? Open the bottle and take a gentle sniff.

Knowing your oils is the first step towards a safe and beautiful aromatherapy practice. ๐Ÿ’›

Have you experienced true Melissa essential oil? We'd love to hear what you think of its beautiful aroma. ๐Ÿ‘‡
