A male African jacana protects his chick on the Chobe River in Namibia. Often called the "Jesus bird," the species' long legs and claws enable it to walk across lily pads and other vegetation found atop bodies of water across sub-Saharan Africa, including flooded grasslands, marshes, ponds, and shallow lakes. Male African jacanas typically care for chicks and can carry them under their wings.

The amount we need to fundraise VS what it takes to make GUI a reality in Singapore feels like heaven and earth. How are we going to raise 2.7 million as a non-profit society?

We have no idea, but we continue to do the work because we know that it is important. For now, GUI has decided to breakdown the targets to keep ourselves sane, in the spirit of the Malay proverb, "sedikit-sedikit lama-lama jadi bukit" - by setting the first milestone of $250,000 by September 2026. Thanks to our volunteers, Stef and Evon, we visualised how it would look like to hit our first milestone, with $500 representing each grid. Look how much it will take to reach the top of the tree (and that's not even the full goal!)

As of 30 June 2026, we've raised around $22,000+. Every amount adds up.

Over the last 18 years - be it at Lim Chu Kang, or 91 Lorong Chencharu, or now @ 11 Chencharu Close, the GUI community continues to transform barren ground into living soil rich with nutrients, microorganisms, worms, insects, and life. The soil is alive, and we are a part of its ecosystem.

The new Kampung Kampus sits within the larger Chencharu development and will continue serving future generations of residents and visitors.

It is also important to note that building the Kampung Kampus is also only possible through volunteer labour, donated materials, sponsorships, pro-bono expertise, and material reuse. Through the power of community, we have kept costs significantly below what a conventional development of this scale would have required. And in Singapore, NO such community organisation has undertaken infrastructure of this scale before.

Against all odds, GUI continues to strive on. Help GUI rebuild today, and come and join us on the ground! Link; https://guilink.sohfulblueprint.com/keepkampungalive
