Designing for Dignity: Breaking Down the 2025 BCA Guidelines for Accessible Changing Rooms (ACR) 🏗️♿

Creating inclusive public spaces isn't just about ticking compliance boxes—it’s about preserving human dignity, independence, and comfort for everyone in our community. Under Section 5.3 (Pages 66–67) of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Code on Accessibility in the Built Environment 2025, Singapore sets a gold standard for Accessible Changing Rooms (ACRs).

Here is everything architects, facility managers, and accessibility advocates need to know about what makes an ACR compliant, safe, and truly functional.

Key Specifications at a Glance
1. Spatial Dimensions & Layout
• Minimum Room Dimensions: The room must offer a clear internal size of at least 2600 mm (width) × 2300 mm (depth) to allow power wheelchair users and caregivers to maneuver without bottlenecking.
• Maneuvering Clearances:
1800 mm minimum clear floor space for a wheelchair to turn freely.
Dedicated clear floor space adjacent to the changing bench (900 mm x 1500 mm) to enable seamless side transfers.
Entryway clear floor space (750 mm x 1200 mm) ensuring no steps, drops, or slopes at the threshold.

1. Height-Adjustable Changing Bench / Bed
• Dimensions: Must measure at least 1800 mm in length and 750 mm in width.
• Safe Working Load (SWL): Specified to support a minimum safe working load of 200 kg.
• Adjustability: Powered height-adjustability allows the bench to lower for smooth, dignified transfers from a wheelchair, and raise to an ergonomic working height for caregivers.
• Clearance: Kept at an offset distance of 150 mm to 300 mm from adjacent walls to allow proper caregiver positioning.

2. Integrated Sanitary & Safety Features
• Full Washroom Compliance: Equipped with an accessible water closet (WC), grab bars, washbasin, self-closing water spray, and toilet roll dispenser.
• Emergency Assistance System: Includes an easily reachable emergency push-button / pull-cord system.
• User Amenities: Dual-height coat hooks and a full-length wall mirror ensuring full functionality for both seated and standing users.
• Doorway Integrity: The door trajectory must remain unobstructed by the extended changing bench or bed at all times.

Why Compliance Matters
"Accessibility is not an afterthought—it’s the foundation of an inclusive built environment."

By standardizing these provisions in public places like shopping malls, transport hubs, healthcare facilities, and civic centers, Singapore ensures adults with severe physical disabilities and their caregivers can participate fully in public life with safety, ease, and self-respect.

Raising Accessibility: How Pressalit INDIVO Lifts Are Redefining Inclusive Kitchens & CafĂŠs

Creating inclusive spaces isn’t just a design trend — it’s a responsibility.

Schools, cafĂŠs, and public institutions increasingly recognise that accessibility must be built into everyday environments.

Pressalit’s INDIVO Pack delivers exactly that: a height‑adjustable lift system that transforms fixed countertops, sinks, and worktops into flexible, user‑friendly surfaces for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility.

Why INDIVO Packs Matter
Traditional fixed-height counters create barriers. INDIVO Packs remove them by allowing worktops to move smoothly within a 300 mm height range (645–945 mm), giving both seated and standing users ergonomic access.

This adaptability supports independence, safety, and equal participation.

A Complete Accessibility Solution — In One Pack
Pressalit emphasises simplicity:

“Easy to order – one pack contains all you need (excl. worktop). Easy to install and adjust to size on site.”

Each INDIVO Pack includes:

Electric lifting columns (2‑leg or 3‑leg versions)

Cross brace for stability
Safety strip (self‑adhesive)
Cable tray
Electrical components kit
Worktop brackets
Fascia brackets

This means schools and cafĂŠs can install accessible counters without complex planning or sourcing multiple components.

Three Sizes for Every Space
Pressalit offers small, medium, and large packs to fit worktops from 600 mm to 3125 mm.

2‑Leg Packs (Max load: 100 kg)
Small: 600–1525 mm
Medium: 1526–2325 mm
Large: 2326–3125 mm

3‑Leg Packs (Max load: 150 kg)
Same size ranges, but with increased stability and load capacity — ideal for longer café counters or heavy-duty school worktops.

Where INDIVO Packs Make the Biggest Impact

🏫 Schools & Institutions
Adjustable worktops ensure students of all abilities can participate equally in:
Cooking classes
Science labs
Hands‑on learning activities

☕ Cafés, Bars & Restaurants
CafĂŠs benefit from:

Accessible bar counters
Adjustable prep stations
Inclusive dining experiences for wheelchair users

Whether guests are seated or standing, the counter adapts to them — not the other way around.

🏠 Private Homes & Care Homes
Families and caregivers gain:
Ergonomic kitchen setups
Safer daily routines
Flexible surfaces for users with varying mobility needs

Designed for Reliability — Built in Denmark
Pressalit has been developing accessible kitchens since 1975, backed by:

ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 certifications
Danish manufacturing quality

Their commitment to accessibility aligns with global sustainability and inclusion goals, including the UN Global Goals for Quality Education and Clean Water & Sanitation.

Accessibility Made Natural
The INDIVO Pack isn’t just a product — it’s a philosophy. It makes accessibility a natural part of everyday life, ensuring that kitchens, classrooms, and cafés become places where everyone can participate confidently and independently.

“Mobility Meets Dignity: How Pressalit’s Mobile Changing & Showering Trolleys Transform Accessible Care”

When accessibility needs change from room to room, mobility becomes empowerment — and that’s exactly what the Pressalit Mobile Changing Trolley (MCT) and Mobile Shower & Change Trolley (MSCT) deliver.

Designed for people who cannot stand or sit independently, these mobile trolleys provide a safe, comfortable, height‑adjustable platform for changing or showering — and they move with the caregiver, not against them.

Both the MCT and MSCT are built with high‑quality materials, easy‑clean surfaces, fold‑down safety rails, and full access from all sides, giving caregivers optimal working conditions while ensuring user comfort and dignity.

💡 Why They’re Perfect for Accessible Changing Rooms
In many malls, schools, hospitals, and public facilities, a fixed wall‑mounted changing table may not be enough — especially when users need to be transported safely between spaces or when the care routine requires showering and changing in the same session.

This is where the Pressalit MCT & MSCT shine:

Fully mobile — move the trolley between rooms without transferring the user.

Height adjustable (manual or electric) — safer transfers and ergonomic working height for caregivers.

Fold‑down safety rails — easy access from all sides, ideal when multiple caregivers are involved.

Stable, secure platform — designed specifically for adults and children with reduced mobility.

Showering capability (MSCT) — integrated drainage tilt and water‑management features for safe wet‑room use.

Improved user comfort & mental wellbeing — solid rails help users feel protected and reduce distress.

🏢 For Accessible Changing Rooms in Singapore
Whether in malls implementing Changing Places‑style facilities or institutions upgrading their inclusive infrastructure, the MCT and MSCT provide flexibility that fixed tables cannot. They support:

Multi‑room caregiving

Complex care routines

Safe showering and changing

Reduced transfers for users

Better ergonomics for caregivers

In short: they bring dignity, safety, and mobility together — exactly what an Accessible Changing Room should deliver.

“IMM’s Hidden Gem: The Accessible Changing Room Everyone Should Know About!”

Singapore has been pushing hard for a more inclusive built environment — and IMM Singapore is one of the malls leading the way. Under the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the Code on Accessibility in the Built Environment sets the baseline for inclusive design, ensuring buildings provide barrier‑free routes, accessible toilets, and features that support persons with disabilities, seniors, and caregivers. Building and...

IMM has stepped up by implementing a fully equipped Accessible Changing Room (ACR) that goes beyond minimum requirements. This space supports individuals with severe disabilities who need a safe, dignified place for hygiene care — something a standard accessible toilet simply cannot provide.

🎥 In today’s video, I’ll show you exactly how to get to IMM’s Accessible Changing Room — from the nearest entrance, lift lobby, and wayfinding signs — so caregivers and families can navigate the mall with confidence.

What I love most is how IMM didn’t just “comply”; they embraced the spirit of inclusivity. Their ACR is thoughtfully located along a barrier‑free route, aligning with BCA’s accessibility principles that emphasise clear wayfinding, accessible paths, and safe, usable facilities for all. go.gov.sg

This is what real inclusion looks like — not just meeting standards, but making everyday life easier for the people who need it most.

Accessible Changing Room (ACR) is a specialized facility designed to facilitate the cleaning and changing of adults, elderly persons, and older children with physical impairments. Unlike standard accessible toilets, which may lack the space or equipment for complex care needs, ACRs are equipped with height-adjustable features and extra space to accommodate both the user and their caregivers. The number of such ACR are growing and can currently be located in these locations below in the Google Maps.

Accessibility in motion: Pasir Ris Integrated Transport Hub Sets the Standard

Pasir Ris Mall’s integrated transport hub isn’t just about convenience — it’s about dignity, independence, and thoughtful design for everyone. One standout feature is the accessible changing room located right inside the bus interchange, equipped with an adjustable‑height changing table like the Pressalit CT 4000.

Why does this matter?

Because families, caregivers, and persons with disabilities deserve safe, hygienic, and comfortable facilities that respect their needs. An adjustable-height changing table isn’t a luxury — it’s essential infrastructure.

Why Adjustable-Height Changing Tables Are Game-Changers

• Safer for caregivers
Height adjustability reduces heavy lifting, awkward bending, and injury risks. Caregivers can work at a comfortable level, making transfers smoother and safer.
• Dignity for users
Adults and older children with mobility challenges often outgrow baby changing stations. A full-sized, sturdy, height-adjustable table ensures they are supported with respect and comfort.
• Inclusive public transport
When a bus interchange includes facilities like the Pressalit CT 4000, it signals that accessibility isn’t an afterthought — it’s part of the journey.
• Future-ready design
As Singapore moves toward universal design, hubs like Pasir Ris show how thoughtful planning can uplift entire communities.

This is what accessibility in motion looks like — practical, human-centered, and empowering.
