On Saturday, 23rd May, Practicing Audiologist and Student Audiology members of SAPS volunteered at the โ€œHealthy Families, Strong Communitiesโ€ event at Ang Mo Kio Community Centre, bringing hearing care closer to the heartland.

We engaged close to 200 residents who visited our booth, where a Signia-sponsored Gachapon invited each person to draw a ball and attempt a true-or-false question on hearing health. We were heartened to see how many already knew that untreated hearing loss is linked to cognitive decline. The questions also opened up meaningful conversations for us to educate the members of the public on Audiologist as a go to professional for hearing care, that hearing aids can benefit even those with milder forms of hearing loss, and that for most cases of permanent hearing loss, hearing aids, rather than surgery or medication, are usually the recommended path forward.

At the screening area, we carried out a boothless screening protocol made possible by the support of , with providing the otoscope and audiometer used on the day. Of the 85 residents we screened, roughly did not respond at the screening level, a quiet reminder of how often hearing loss goes unnoticed in the community and why accessible screenings like this one play such an important role in surfacing concerns early.

A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers Augustin Fiala, Charis Koh, Doris Shu Sieng Ley, Gwendolyn, Isshani Devaraj, Juoe Liu, Kavya Hegde, Sadrina Shah, Sunil Kumar, Sharad Govil, AuD,Su Junqiang, Chu Yen Lee, Ying Pei Soo, Wilson for giving up their Saturday morning to be part of this important work, and to our industry partners Signia Hearing, Demant , and Starkey Hearing for their generous support of the goodie bag contents. We look forward to the next one.

Singapore has approximately 200 practising audiologists, with over 90% registered with the Society for Audiology Professionals Singapore (SAPS). SAPS registration means a practitioner is university-qualified, adheres to a code of ethics, and keeps their knowledge current through continuing education.

We encourage members of the public to look for SAPS registered audiologist when seeking hearing care, because the right qualifications, training, and ethics make all the difference. To find a SAPS-registered audiologist, visit https://www.audiologysingapore.org/find-an-audiologist

More than a decade ago, my journey into audiology began while working with children with special needs, many of whom faced ear and hearing challenges. Through their families, I was introduced to the role audiologists play alongside ENT and that experience set the direction for my career. Since then, it has been a path shaped by both challenges and deeply rewarding moments. The resilience of patients and their progress continue to serve as a strong source of motivation. One particularly meaningful chapter was my time at CGH, where I had the opportunity to contribute to strengthening the professional recognition of the audiology team. Today, the team is well-regarded for its contributions across clinical care, research, and education within SingHealth.

One of the key challenges during my tenure was bringing people together. Professional regulation alone does not define recognition; its primary purpose is to safeguard patient care. As a profession, we must continue to uphold high standards not because we are required to, but because it is the right thing to do. During that term, we took small but meaningful steps forward, including the introduction of CME initiatives, a professional diary, work towards best practice guidelines, and had community hearing screening initiatives. These efforts helped lay the groundwork for stronger self-regulation and professional development.

Audiology has progressed over the years, but not fast enough to meet growing demand. There will never be enough audiologists to fully support the hearing healthcare landscape in Singapore. This makes collaborative care increasingly important. As we seek to expand our own scope of practice, we must also recognise that other hearing healthcare professionals share similar goals. Progress requires alignment, shared purpose, and collective commitment.

I first stumbled upon audiology by accident in 2012 and was excited to learn that there was healthcare profession that deals with hearing - a topic I was fascinated by after learning about the auditory system in an undergrad neuroscience module. A year later, I joined the first batch of students in NUSโ€™s audiology programme. During orientation, Dr Lynne Lim encouraged us to take ownership of developing this young profession after we graduated. That message, together with the passion of my teachers at NUS, has stayed with me and continues to guide the work I do today.

One of the defining moments was in 2019, when SAPS was invited by the Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery Singapore (SOHNSS) to organise a one-day Audiology Track at the 18th ASEAN ORL-HNS Congress. It was an exhilarating experience working with Dr. Barrie Tan (then SOHNSS president), the SAPS congress sub-committee, industry sponsors and the events company to put together an exciting line-up of speakers. Seeing a packed room most of the day was incredibly rewarding. Little did I know that it would be one of the last in-person events I would oversee during my two terms, as the pandemic forced us into three years of virtual engagement!

Since I graduated a decade ago, the field has grown tremendously. Public awareness of hearing loss has increased, helped by government-supported screening programmes and community-based services. The recognition of a link between hearing loss and dementia, and the rise of over-the-counter hearing aids (or hearables) are also developments which the profession has needed to respond to.

As we step into 2026, the Society for Audiology Professionals Singapore is proud to welcome both our new and returning members.

This year marks a meaningful milestone for our profession, with SAPS now representing an estimated 92 percent of practising audiologists in Singapore. Our community has grown steadily to 182 members, with strong representation across public healthcare, private practice, and industry.

SAPS will continue to strengthen its work in representing the interests of audiologists in Singapore through advocacy for quality hearing and balance care. We are committed to building strong foundations for self-regulation, so that our profession continues to uphold ethical practice, act with integrity in the public's interest, and gain recognition as key professionals within the broader healthcare community.
